Position Title Assistant Professor of Environmental Science - Fisheries Job Type Faculty Position Information

The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) invites applications for a nine (9) month, tenure-track Assistant Professor from environmental scientists specializing in coastal or pelagic fisheries. The new assistant professor will teach undergraduate and graduate (MS/PhD) courses and conduct research contributing to the Environmental Science/Marine Science undergraduate program and the graduate programs in Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Sciences (MEES) and Toxicology at UMES.

We seek a scientist who will complement existing teaching and research areas within the department and who will develop collaborative research with departmental and University colleagues, and mentor students particularly in the NOAA Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC,

Teaching responsibilities may include biology of fishes, fisheries science, marine ecology, biostatistics, or graduate courses in the new professor's area of expertise. Possible research areas include marine fish population, dynamics, or fish biogeography and fish habitat characterization/restoration including spatial analysis and land-water linkages and/or climate change. The new assistant professor will have the opportunity to leverage existing resources at the Paul Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Laboratory and with NOAA LMRCSC.

Responsibilities

* Teach graduate and undergraduate courses.

* Conduct research in his/her field of expertise.

* Recruit and mentor graduate students.

* Publish in scholarly journals.

* Secure funding from various agencies to support his or her research.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Classification 25-0000 Education, Training, and Library Occupations Required Qualifications

* Ph.D. in fisheries science, oceanography, marine biology, biology, zoology, or a related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

* Demonstrated experience in marine fish ecology, population dynamics/quantitative ecology or population genetics.

Preferred Qualifications

* A record of scholarship as evidenced by publications and/or external funding activities .

* Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

* Strong writing skills.

* Strong statistical skills.

* Ability to motivate and inspire a diverse body to be academically and personally successful.
