Duration: Academic Year (this position follows the 10-month academic schedule)

Start Date: We anticipate a Fall 2025 start, but are open to considering an earlier start based availability

Brief Description of Duties:

SUNY Morrisville is seeking an Assistant Professor for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position for our Horticulture program! The Assistant Professor will support course instruction at the Associate and Baccalaureate levels, providing lectures and hands-on lab planning, crop maintenance, preparation, and instruction for a range of horticulture courses.

The applicant's Horticultural knowledge and skill set should include the following:

* Knowledge of the structure and function of higher vascular plants, with emphasis on cell structure, photosynthesis and respiration, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, and Mendelian genetics.

* A greater understanding of the fruit and vegetable production industry, an increased knowledge of the variety of vegetables, and knowledge of the specific cultural needs of the common vegetable species. Greenhouse and nursery design, construction, structure, machinery, production methods, and operation.

* Familiarity with the NOFA-NY organic standards and commitment to creating a sustainable regional food system that is ecologically sound and economically viable in our geographic region.

* To explore utilizing observation and experimentation including division and separation, layering, grafting, budding, cuttings, micropropagation, and seed propagation.

* Insight into the application, evaluation, and analysis of ecological, biological, and economic principles from each of the following disciplines: entomology, nematology, plant pathology, and weed science.

* Expertise in an advanced study of the propagation, production, and processing of cannabis.

* Comprehension with the introduction to integrated pest management tactics of monitoring, forecasting, determining thresholds, and control options. In addition to the principles of pest control emphasizing biological, cultural, and regulatory control methods in a sound ecological and economic manner.

* Horticultural business knowledge and connections.

* Horticultural product development, branding, and sales.

This person plays a vital role in the departmental coordination of crop production scheduling, overseeing of the college certified organic farm, crop and specimen plant maintenance and pest control, crop and product marketing and sales, generation of revenue, and assistance with future department research and entrepreneurial activities. There is an expectation that the faculty member will have industry experience and connections.

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about creating an educational environment that is innovative and inspiring to students. The candidate will be a collaborative team member of the Horticulture, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Business, and Natural Resources Conservation department, eager to support the development of the next generation of horticulture professionals. We are willing to provide training and mentorship to motivated candidates.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Classroom Instruction (courses may include):

* Botany-Form Function Seed Plant

* Horticultural Practices

* Fruit & Vegetable Production

* Plant Protection

* Plant Propagation

* Cannabis Propagation & Production

* Integrated Pest Management

Curriculum Development:

* Development of Horticulture courses for the Horticulture B. Tech and Horticulture AAS degree programs.

* Help coordinate and strengthen relationships between SUNY Morrisville and the greater Horticultural Industry partners.

Student Mentorship:

* Provide guidance and support to students throughout their educational journey, including recruiting students to join our program, academic advising & retention, career counseling, supervision of student interns, and advising student clubs.

* Foster a student-centered approach that emphasizes individual growth and prepares students for success after graduation.

In addition to teaching, faculty are also expected to engage in departmental, institutional, and community service. These may include academic advising, program assessment, student recruitment, club advisement, mentoring of undergraduate student research, grantsmanship, faculty-led internship programs, and independent research and consulting.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

* Master's Degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, or other closely related fields.

* Some experience teaching or working as an instructor.

* Relevant industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

* PhD related to Horticulture, Plant Science, or other closely related fields.

* Strong interpersonal and communication (both written and oral) skills.

* Teaching experience at the collegiate or vocational level in a related/relevant discipline
