Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience. Four years of specialized experience or associate's degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for bachelor's degree; J.D. or master's degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have a bachelor's degree in communications, Media/Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or related field; and 5 years professional experience in public and/or private sector public relations, communications or speechwriting.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Communications Director and Deputy Communications Director, the Assistant Public Information Officer will be primarily responsible for writing and managing press inquiries for the Department's Public Affairs Group. Writing assignments may include press releases, press statements or inquiry responses, talking points, briefings and social media content. Other duties may include: researching and writing Department or Commissioner statements, executive proclamations, newsletter articles, legislative hearing statements, responses to correspondence, and any other writing assignments; performing research utilizing internal and external resources including conducting interviews; researching appropriateness of requests and recommending participation/presentation at particular functions; performing the necessary follow-up after presentations are complete; and working closely with Public Affairs Group staff to help ensure assignments/projects are accurate, complete and timely.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
