ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT / STREET CLEANING

CDL PREFERRED UPON ENTRY

An Overview

An Assistant Superintendent/Street Cleaning supports and supervises a group of heavy equipment operators, equipment operators and laborers who are assigned to perform general street cleaning work within the City of Alexandria. An employee in this class leads and motivates the street cleaning team by example daily. You will enforce city standards related to safety, customer service, productivity and compliance within the department while ensuring city streets and rights-of-way are kept clean of trash, dirt, and debris. You will be reporting directly to the Superintendent/Street Cleaning in which you would be collaborating in maintaining and improving its overall structure.

* Enforces street cleaning, opening and closing procedures of team members by monitoring and reporting daily attendance, Uniform/PPE compliance, conducting morning meetings, observing vehicle inspections and maintaining proper schedule

* Under the direction and guidance of the Street Cleaning Superintendent - Hires, trains, reviews, and evaluates employees' performance

* Conduct investigations for all injuries and incidents - collaborates with other departments such as safety and human resources in retraining and reducing unsafe behaviors within the department

* Conducts field observations of direct reports ensuring productivity and safety compliance are met daily

* Collaborates with Fleet Services ensuring vehicles are fully compliant within preventive maintenance schedules, reported repairs and seasonal inspections for special projects.

* Coordinates special collection, disposal, and street cleaning requests, i.e., City streets, parking lots or areas to be policed for trash, alley request, and illegal dumping as requested from citizens or private concerns located within the City of Alexandria.

* Coordinates various types of refuse disposal, collection, and street cleaning done within the city, and determines the proper equipment to utilize to resolve the problem, i.e., oil spills, loose gravel, or glass in the street.

* Receives, reviews and resolve complaints/requests for service or any other related inquiries related to street cleaning via asset management system, in person, or by telephone.

* Maintains proper inventory of materials and supplies - Collaborates with Superintendent in improving such

* Prepares bills of materials, estimates, informal quotes, spreadsheets, SOP's, work orders, and other written reports, verifying contractor invoices;

* Compiles daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports.

* Leads the department in absence of Superintendent of Street Cleaning and performs duties of Labor Supervisor when required.

* Supports Snow and other Storm emergency cleanup efforts.

* Performs work on weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and at other seasonal projects

* Performs other related work as required including route coverage.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess Five years of experience as an Equipment Operator II or Heavy Equipment Operator in refuse collection, disposal maintenance, or Street Cleaning and completion of high school courses or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Employees in this class must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), issued by the state of the employees' residence, with the proper endorsement for the vehicle being driven or ability to obtain within three (3) months of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should possess a Two-Year College degree/Associate degree; three (3) years of Solid Waste Management, Public Works Management experience or five (5) years of lead supervisory experience. The candidate must have the ability to operate heavy equipment in support of street cleaning, snow, or maintenance operations. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by your state of residence, upon appointment. Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and in inclement weather as this position is considered essential. This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug testing, criminal background.
