Job Description:

Job Objective: Responsible for maintaining good customer relations and giving prompt and courteous assistance to customers. Maintain a clean, orderly and safe store environment. Work closely with the Store Manger to ensure that all aspects of regular operations and completed on a daily basis.

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to handle cash, make change, and operate a cash register
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Thrift Store Manager: Stocking, pricing, cleaning, sorting, and other duties as assigned. Must be able to work with little or no supervision
  • Capable of running all aspects of the store in the absence of the manager
  • Assist with helping the store achieve a net profit at the end of the fiscal year
  • Write routine reports
  • Help oversee and direct community volunteers
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the store manager in accordance with Salvation Army policies and applicable laws
  • Work with the Store Manager to continually keep Divisional Headquarters aware of all situations that could impact The Salvation's Army's local partners, income or reputation

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High school graduate or equivalent

Experience: Experience in retail sales; management or supervisory experience preferred

Skills/Abilities:

  • Read and understand basic written material
  • Communicate in English
  • Communicate in Spanish preferred but not required
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects in an organized and efficient manner to meet tight deadlines
  • Respond to challenging situations in a calm and effective manner
  • Complete projects on schedule
  • Initiative
  • Work under stressful conditions
  • Conduct basic math and cash transactions
  • Follow directions and work with minimum of supervision
  • Operate basic retail equipment including cash register, telephone, personal computer, copier, fax and scanning equipment
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Maintain regular and punctual work attendance
  • Work as a member of a team and maintain positive / professional relationships with customers, donors, and the public

Supervisory Duties: This position has authority to recommend employment status changes of subordinate personnel, make disciplinary decisions and to formally evaluate performance of subordinate employees. All human resource related decisions will be cleared with the Store Manager, South KS Field Rep or Service Extension Director and the HR department at DHQ.

Physical Requirements: Include speaking, hearing and vision ability; manual dexterity; lifting, pulling and pushing materials up to 25 pounds; bending, squatting, and walking; standing for extended periods of time. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job.

Travel: Occasional in-town travel

Driving: Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence. Must be approved and maintain approval through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a fast paced, retail store setting; position requires work on Saturdays.
