Description: Join Our Team as an Associate Controller at Berea College!Are you an experienced accounting professional looking for a new opportunity? Berea College is hiring an Associate Controller to provide direct support to the Controller in carrying out the functions of the Office of Financial Affairs. The Associate Controller also supervises the Senior Accountant and Accounts Payable Manager and assists the Controller with audit coordination. Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct support to the Controller in carrying out the functions of the Office of Financial Affairs.
  • Supervises Senior Accountant and Accounts Payable Manager
  • Oversees annual retirement plan audit and A-133 federal government grants audit.
  • Assists with preparation of annual financial reports and provides assistance as needed for external auditors.
  • Assists in establishing and strengthening internal controls.
  • Reviews and approves all account reconciliations.
  • Prepares sales tax returns
  • Reviews and approves all payroll tax reporting, i.e. Form 941, state and local payroll tax returns
  • Oversees Red Flag Rules program
  • Assists in preparation of annual Forms 990 and 990T information
  • Completes and files annual IRS Forms 1042 and 1042S.
  • Responsible for Banner chart of account maintenance
  • Develops and maintains training opportunities for Banner Finance users.
What You'll Bring: Education required to ensure success in this position:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related area, required
  • Master's Degree, preferred
Experience required to ensure success in this position:
  • Three or more years related experience, with substantive knowledge and experience across a wide variety of accounting functions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, ability to develop positive working relationships.
  • Eagerness to participate in continuing education.
Special Skills, knowledge and abilities:
  • Interact with integrated computerized financial system;
  • Work independently and collaboratively;
  • Establish priorities;
  • Work under pressure of deadlines, and excellent follow-up skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively, editing work for spelling and grammar.
  • Able to present numerical data effectively.
  • Able to foster an environment of strong ethics and integrity.
  • Knowledge base of non-profit accounting with a working knowledge of accounting and operational issues.
  • Practical knowledge of a wide range of business processes is highly desirable.
License, certification, or registration necessary:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Required background checks
  • CPA preferred

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds
  • Sedentary work in office setting
