ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Associate Director, Academic Advising to join our team. This includes diversity,equity, inclusion, access, belonging (DEIAB) and culture.Reporting to the Vice President, Enrollment Services and Registrar, the Associate Director will assist in overseeing the vision and management of undergraduate advising services provided by the Advising and Academic Success office. In line with the college's mission to support student success, the incumbent oversees a team of academic advisors who proactively engage with undergraduate students and academic leadership across 14 educational departments. The position will play a critical role in the retention, progression, and graduation of our students. The Advising and Academic Success office is committed to a community of excellence, seeking team members whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.This is a full-time position. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or as defined by the department. The position is eligible for flexible scheduling and can be performed on-site, hybrid in-region, with at least three days in the office or may be required as a condition of employment. The demands of this work may include weekends or evenings. The college reserves the right to modify schedules as needed to meet the business needs with appropriate notice.Essential FunctionsDepartment Administrative Operations- 40%
  • Provide leadership and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the department, including budget tracking, project planning, events, and management of staff
  • Recruit, hire, onboard and supervise staff positions; manage performance evaluation process, ensure consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures; apply performance management skills for improved performance, make recommendations in discipline and terminations, as required
  • Operationalize and oversee the formulation, interpretation and administration of policies, procedures, and programs for the department in accordance with the strategic plan of the College
  • Working with the VP, develop and implement a strategic plan to integrate advising and student support services, ensuring equity and access.
  • Oversee the collaboration, facilitation, and implementation of advising services for various student populations, including but not limited to first year, continuing, and at-risk students, including students identified through the college's CARE network, and other student populations as needed.
  • Build, foster, and maintain intentional relationships with campus partners
  • Help spearhead the college's graduation audit process to ensure prompt evaluation and assistance for students nearing their graduation requirements. This requires close collaboration with enrollment services and undergraduate educational departments.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to introduce a formal infrastructure for recording and archiving student-related advising notes.
  • Enforce all College policies and work with the department of environmental health and safety to maintain a safe and secure work and learning environment for students, faculty and staff
  • Serves on the CARE Team
Student Advising 35%
  • Provide short- and long-term support for a specialized student caseload consisting of first-time freshman, continuing students, students in academic jeopardy, students identified through the CARE network, and other high-need cases as requested.
  • Using a holistic advising approach, establishes individualized and collaborative relationships with students to learn their skill levels, aptitudes, interests, and strengths; continuously monitor and intervene as needed.
  • Utilize data to proactively help students maximize their success in college and ensure that students are familiar with the college's opportunities, academic policies, and procedures and provide guidance on degree and graduation requirements.
  • Identify the needs of current students, including a focus on cohorts of historically underrepresented students in art and design fields; remain abreast of student trends on the ArtCenter campus and nationwide; and develop recommendations to improve existing programs.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the major requirements and courses offered by all major programs.
Retention, Data, & Program Support 20%
  • Utilize data-driven approaches to monitor and improve advising outcomes, including retention and completion rates
  • Collaborate with academic divisions to determine the programming needs for students, faculty, and staff using institutional data.
  • Develop and maintain advising resources for students, faculty, and staff (including workshops, presentations, handbooks, etc.).
  • Identify best practices and trends by benchmarking with other colleges to enhance the college's management of academic advising.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Policy Committee and other relevant parties to suggest policies that bolster students' academic achievements and guarantee effective dissemination of these policies to students.
  • Manages and analyzes data of undergraduate cohorts, including but not limited to incoming students, students on academic probation, students in academic distress, the First-Year Immersion (FYI) population, etc.

  • Serve on educational or college-wide committees, work groups, task forces and/or councils
  • Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations
  • Keep current on educational trends, competitors, and best practices related to the division programs
  • Attend conferences and seminars
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in student affairs, student personnel administration, higher education administration, or counseling and guidance
  • At least 4 years of experience at the college level in an academic advising office
  • At least two years in a leadership role within a department, including budget tracking and project management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and philosophies, such as CAS advising standards and student development theories
  • Ability to disseminate accurate information regarding department and college policies, procedures, and requirements
  • The ability to cultivate and maintain positive and functional collaborations with diverse curricular and co-curricular stakeholders
  • Possess skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, and project management
  • Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented student groups, such as ethnic minority communities, first-generation college students, re-entry, LGBTQI, and students with disabilities.
  • Project management, event planning, and assessment skills, including the establishment and measurement of programs and/or learning outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging into work practices and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter's diverse communities
  • Ability to enforce and implement policies and procedures
  • Ability to handle all information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills for internal and external communications
  • Strong computer skills, with a proficiency in Microsoft Office, Teams, Zoom and the ability to learn new software as needed
