Behring CenterWe are seeking an Associate Director for the Office of Curatorial Affairs (OCA) who will lead the National Museum of American History's (NMAH's) curatorial work in exhibitions, collections development, and research. The Associate Director will provide dynamic and thoughtful leadership, vision, support, and direction to the OCA in the planning, development, and implementation of exhibitions, collecting, research, publication, and programming, actively engaging the public in museum activities and developing a wide range of public history initiatives.The Associate Director will nurture the intellectual life of the museum, advancing and linking scholarly and collections activities and leveraging his/her knowledge of professional standards, best practices, and issues related to historical research, material culture, museum management, exhibitions, and public service. The Associate Director will work collaboratively with other members of the Museum's Senior Leadership team and serve as a key advisor to the NMAH Director and NMAH Deputy Director of Public History on scholarly and collections programs and issues.Minimum Requirements:
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret material culture and archival resources.
  • Experience engaging broad public audiences.
  • Management experience in large, complex organizations.
  • A Ph.D. in American Studies, History, Public Humanities, or related field is strongly preferred.This is a full-time, permanent Federal position.
