Associate Director of Development, Major Gifts, Biomedical Discovery

Main Work Location: Redwood City, CA. Schedule: Hybrid work schedule (at least 2 days per week on-site).

Medical Center Development (MCD) supports Stanford Medicine with highly trained and experienced fundraising professionals and partner teams and is committed to a donor-centric approach to development. This position requires experience, sensitivity, diplomacy, and the ability to operate independently while representing Stanford Medicine. If you have the strategic skills necessary to balance prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities while building donor-centric, meaningful relationships, this position might be for you.

JOB PURPOSE:The position will directly manage a portfolio of approximately 50 to 75 major gifts prospects capable of making a gift between $250,000 - $5,000,000. This role will focus on building the donor base and philanthropic revenue for key Biomedical Discovery priorities, including support for PhD fellowships, a seed grant program for innovative research, and department and faculty-based basic science research initiatives, programs, endowments and Institutes.

In this role, you will:

  • Support philanthropic goals, objectives, and strategies for Biomedical Discovery initiatives.
  • Grow and manage a portfolio of approximately 50 to 75 prospects and donors, to cultivate, solicit, and steward their support.
  • Take responsibility for a wide range of fundraising activities, including maintaining an active level of contacts, identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, providing stewardship, and coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts, as needed.
  • Build and manage relationships with MCD colleagues, department leadership, and clinical and administrative staff, to continuously and creatively grow the prospect pipeline.
  • Work closely with basic science faculty members within the School of Medicine to create and advance compelling gift opportunities.
  • Support Biomedical Discovery team members in preparation of briefing materials.
  • Prepare faculty for donor meetings and respond to donor requests for information and written proposals.
  • Become keenly familiar with Biomedical Discovery cases for support and serve as a subject matter expert.
  • Contribute to developing Biomedical Discovery content materials and participate in ongoing training for field staff.
  • Plan and execute donor cultivation events to highlight timely initiatives and deepen engagement with new and existing donors.
  • Work closely with other development colleagues to align program goals with the university's development organization's overall giving goals.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the Biomedical Discovery team's key priorities.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
  • Demonstrated experience guiding and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Some travel may be required.

The expected pay range for this position is $130,000 to $146,000 per annum.
