Job SummaryThe Associate Director of Residential Life - Staffing and Development promotes the University Residences mission, leadership and student-centered focus of residential support for University Residences. This position reports to and acts in the absence of the Director managing a large team of professionals, comprised of smaller units led by individual managers. Serving on the leadership team within Residential Life contributes to determining departmental procedures and protocols, and establishing operational plans for staffing, program development and assessment. This position's focus is on student support and growth through relationships. Responsible for staffing oversight through coordinating and managing day-to-day supervision of Residential Life. The Associate Director participates in long range planning and development of the focus of Residential Life, University Residences, and ultimately the strategic plan of Purdue University. Regularly reviews area of oversight/processes and utilizes data to improve practices. Additionally, this position provides leadership and advisement to various key initiatives within Residential Life and University Residences.

Residential Life (RL) at Purdue University - Purdue's Residential Life Team supports the nearly 18,000 residential students living in University Residences on Purdue University's West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses. Our team is comprised of over 40 professional staff members working on several teams. This includes our Coordinators and Assistant Directors of Residential Life and Residential Services providing direct support to our communities, our Residential Academic Initiatives team supporting the larger projects and programs of the department, and our Student Leadership and Multicultural Education team supporting the many student organizations within our communities.Our mission is to deliver a residential campus environment that provides opportunities for personal growth through relationships. What We Are Looking ForEducation and Experience:Required:
- Master's degree in higher education or related field
- Five (5) years of professional experience working in residential life, housing, student affairs or related field preferably within a college or university setting
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- For example, a Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience or an Associate's degree and nine (9) years of experience
- Experience supervising a team, preferably other managers with teams
- Experience in student and staff development
- Experience with on-call and crisis response.
- Experience in strategy development for program implementation and evaluation
Preferred:
- 6-7 years of professional work experience beyond a Master's degree program in higher education or related field
Skills:Required:
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop professional staff into a cohesive team to produce results
- Demonstrated ability to develop vision and learning outcomes for residential policies and large scale programs
- Demonstrated experience to foster relationships with students, staff, parents and faculty.
- Proven collaboration with various constituents to identify and assess student development needs
- Demonstrated skills in crisis response and emergency management
- Ability to negotiate and influence other to accept and practice developed practices as well as resolve problems with varying difficulty, depth and complexity
- Strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated, have attention to detail, and adept at solving problems
- Broad and in-depth knowledge of systems impacting residential life
- Ability to provide on-call coverage and crisis response for students in a residence hall population at Director level for department
- Working knowledge of procedures and policies supporting crisis response, Title IX and conduct for Residential Life
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds utilizing University Residences Mission, Student Life Vision and teamwork in daily work activities
- Ability to offer leadership, vision, and strategic planning that will contribute to comprehensive University residences programs
- Ability to establish long and short-term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the division
- Demonstrated skills in project planning, program management, and fiscal analysis
- Proficient at commonly used office/computer software, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.
