The SCA's Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City's approximately 1.1 million students. Job Description Summary Associate Engineer-A & B (HVAC, Electrical) reports to a Managing Engineer or higher assignment level Engineer. As a team member under the supervision of team leader prepare scope and design document for HVAC/Electrical system in school buildings, including drawings and specifications. Job Description Responsibilities include: Associate Engineer - A

  • Accountable for the scope, design, and post occupancy of projects in in the HVAC/Electrical discipline for the Authority.
  • Assist in conducting sites surveys and prepare field reports, punch lists, and deficiency reports of HVAC/Electrical Systems to facilitate design decisions that meet the standards of NYCSCA.
  • Assist in the preparation and peer review of construction documents of HVAC/Electrical Systems as part of the design phase of projects. (Reso-A, CIP's and Line projects).
  • Assist or lead in the preparation of scope reports for CIP-s and Reso-A projects of HVAC/Electrical Systems and assist in reviewing contractor bids and submittals to verify they meet the minimum standards and specifications of the SCA.
  • Assist in monitoring the progress of the construction phase of the project HVAC/Electrical Systems.
  • Assist in addressing requests for information.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned.
Associate Engineer - B
  • Facilitates and supports defining project scopes and designs on projects in reference of HVAC/Electrical Systems.
  • Review scope reports and construction documents that have been submitted to ensure they conform to all applicable SCA standards, specifications, building codes, laws, agency requirements, etc. and document deviations.
  • Conduct sites surveys, prepare field reports, punch lists, and deficiency reports of HVAC/Electrical Systems to facilitate design decisions that meet the standards of NYCSCA.
  • Visually observe all aspects of substantially completed work at construction site using design drawings to determine if a contractor has met all the requirements of the project.
  • Create the design drawings and specification intent for contractual construction documents of HVAC/Electrical Systems.
  • Coordinate site assignments with third party surveyors and contractors, determine existing conditions, prepare logs.
  • Edits the content of design drawings and specifications under the direction of seniors and writes bulletins.
  • Compares conditions at the construction site to contract drawings and specifications during site visits/field observations at the site to assess the progress and quality of work.
  • May perform duties of Associate Engineer - A.
  • Perform related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications REQUIRES HVAC ELECTRICAL EXPERIENCE FOR ALL LEVELS.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university program in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, and:
  • Level A: One year of full-time experience in architectural work, or a satisfactory combination of education and experience; or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
  • Level B: Two years of full-time experience serving as an Associate Engineer - A or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.

  • Appointment Rate: $59,835 - $81,087
  • Incumbent Rate: $68,810 - $93,250
Level B:
  • Appointment Rate: $63,788 - $89,748
  • Incumbent Rate: $73,356 - $103,210
Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate. Education Baccalaureate: Engineering Certifications (if required)Work Experience One year of full time experience in one of the following specialty areas: Structural, HVAC, Plumbing and Drainage, or Electrical Engineering work, or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Selective Certification Specialty Fields: ELECTRICAL requires a minimum of one year of experience specializing in electrical work. HEATING, VENTILATION, AND AIR CONDITIONING requires a minimum of one year of experience specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. PLUMBING AND DRAINAGE requires a minimum of one year of experience specializing in plumbing and drainage work.
