The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Los Angeles, California in 2028, returning to the United States for the first time in over 30 years. 2028 will be the first time LA hosts the Paralympic Games, creating an opportunity to expand awareness, understanding and inclusion of people with disabilities.

Associate General Counsel:

The Associate General Counsel will be an integral part of the legal team, working closely with the Vice President & Deputy General Counsel and broader legal department to advise LA28's senior management on legal matters. This position will leverage negotiation, relationship-building, critical-thinking and communication skills to support the legal needs for the commercial and marketing teams of the organization, with a focus on intellectual property matters, including sponsorship agreements, licensing arrangements, marketing and content-creation support, live event and ceremonies contracting and advising, and rights protection work.

This position will report to the Vice President & Deputy General Counsel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a legal advisor to the Chief Legal Officer and VP & Deputy General Counsel, senior management and division heads on identified commercial transactions and legal matters.
  • Steady stream of self-directed analytical work, meetings, decision-making and drafting, including preparing, reviewing and negotiating all varieties of legal documents including but not limited to sponsorship agreements, licensed product agreements, other intellectual property licenses, corporate governance documents and other legal memoranda and correspondence.
  • Assist with the management of communications and relationships with LA28's business and strategic partners.
  • Help establish legal team policies, procedures, and standard operating practices.
  • Work closely with individual departments to anticipate, identify and manage legal exposure and risk management.
  • Review and understand all relevant corporate / stakeholder documents (including the Host City Contract, Olympic Charter, Code of Ethics, etc.).
  • Supervise, monitor and assist in the career development of all subordinate attorneys and paralegals.
  • Work with and supervise outside counsel on matters requiring representation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable international, federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments.
  • Perform significant projects / duties as assigned by the VP & Deputy General Counsel.

While experience in these areas is preferred, we also look for candidates with intellectual curiosity and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly to round out areas where a candidate may not have depth of experience. Background & Qualifications:
  • 10+ years' experience in broad-based transactional and commercial matters required.
  • Concrete understanding of contract and corporate law, and business transactional principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside attorneys, senior management and business associates.
  • Excellent judgment, knowing when to escalate issues.
  • Excellent analytical skills; capable of identifying and prioritizing issues and providing alternative solutions.
  • Excellent project and time-management skills and ability to manage and prioritize changing workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Positive, team-oriented and collaborative attitude.
  • High level of personal integrity and professional ethics; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging (DEIB), and a deep understanding of the intersection between legal matters and DEIB related concepts and principles.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
Position Requirements:

Education:

  • A Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited university
  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
Training/ Certifications
  • License to practice law, be in good standing with the California State Bar and have the ability to practice law in California.
Expectations:
  • Prior law firm and in-house experience a plus
  • Experience in sports, media, live-events or internationally is a plus
  • Work in the LA28 office 4 days per week and 1 day remote

The annual base salary range for this position is $190,000.00 - $210,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28's operational business needs and applicable law.
