Job Description:
The Associate Graphic Designer (AGD) will plan and execute a variety of design projects from conceptualization to completion in support of Developing Brain Institute (DBI) internal and external communications initiatives. The AGD helps lead the development and stewarding communications intended to be distributed across myriad platforms, including print, web and digital, including logos, brochures, recruiting flyers, mailers, large-format graphics (e.g., research posters) and animated graphics/videos. This is a 100% in-person position, and the AGD's work occurs onsite at the main Children's National Hospital campus, 111 Michigan Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.Qualifications:Minimum EducationBachelor's Degree Graphic design and/or multi-media art or similar degree or equivalent work experience. (Required)Minimum Work Experience1 year (Preferred) Including internships or volunteer experience, recent work that demonstrates proficiency working in 2-D and 3-D software, and producing deliverables across all platforms, including flat graphics, animations, and videosRequired Skills/KnowledgeIn-depth, hands-on knowledge of graphic design software is required, including, but not limited to, Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).A working knowledge of Blender, Maya and Zbrush to create characters, animate and produce motion graphics is ideal.Strong knowledge of electronic formatting needs for printed products is ideal. Basic HTML and knowledge of web design principles is helpful as is a commitment to continue to build/improve fluency.Good organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects, respond in a timely way to feedback and produce error-free deliverables are required.Familiarity with specialized needs, such as how to optimize large format designs, like research posters, mix custom color palettes and assign font weight hierarchies is desirable.Functional AccountabilitiesBrand Management
  • Works on projects prioritized by the DBI Director & Chief.
  • Assists with creating engaging visuals to promote DBI in a variety of formats, including but not limited to videos, animations, audio files, screen capture presentations, flash interactions, images, banners, posters, flyers and PowerPoint (PPT) slide decks.
Print Design
  • Working with the Science and Communications manager, assists in developing/maintaining the website
  • Ensures all content complies with copyright laws and best practices for accessibility and usability.
Production Management
  • Performs other multimedia duties within DBI, as needed.
  • Undertakes any additional multimedia assignments delegated by the DBI Director & Chief, including PPT decks for internal and external presentations.
Digital Design
  • Working in a deadline-driven environment, produces deliverables that are free of errors within the allotted period and using a variety of methods to enhance on-time deadline performance, e.g., whiteboard, Asana reminders and Outlook meeting invitations.
  • Synthesizes feedback and ensures that needed edits are carried out promptly.
  • Accepts constructive criticism in a collegial and professional manner and provide the same to the manager to ensure a smooth working relationship.
Asset Management
  • Proactively searches for opportunities to provide added value by identifying graphic designs (2-D and 3-D) done by comparable organizations that may yield visual approaches DBI wants to echo.
  • Translates complex scientific topics into visuals that are easy for a lay audience, such as funders, to understand and appreciate.
  • Ensures that all routine close-out activities are completed, e.g., saving final images to a shared network drive using approved taxonomy and performing quality control on Smartphones so web edits appear correctly on desktops as well as Smartphones.
