Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, is in charge of a section of the medical record department in a municipal hospital, medical center component, skilled nursing facility, ambulatory care facility or health care organization; perform related work.Example of Typical Tasks:
Supervise medical record specialists and other staff.Plan, assign and review the work of medical records personnel.Coordinate the work of the section of the medical record department with other units of the department and/or facility.Provide technical advice on record systems and the use of current nomenclature and established indices.Minimum Qualifications1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a Health Information Administration (HIA) or Health Information Technology (HIT) program accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and six (6) months experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization; or2. High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and3. Completion of a coding, medical record technology or health information technology program approved by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and one (1) year of experience in coding and abstracting medical records ina recognized hospital or health care organization, six (6) months of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or4. Possession of a valid certificate as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and one (1) year of experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, six (6) months of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or5. Three (3) years of satisfactory experience in coding and abstracting medical records in a recognized hospital or health care organization, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.6. A satisfactory equivalent.
