Associate Professor/Professor- Environmental Data Science
SUNY ESF invites applications for a tenure-track, academic year faculty member (starting Fall, 2024) at the Associate or Full Professor level with specialization in environmental data science (Assistant Professor with substantial relevant experience may be considered). We are seeking an interdisciplinary scientist to leverage and enhance our strong expertise in geospatial analysis, statistics, mathematics, and environmental modeling through offering innovative courses, developing new majors, and conducting impactful research in environmental data science. This position, initially carrying a workload allocation of 30% teaching, 40% research, and 30% administration and service, will be located in the department most closely matching the successful candidate's expertise. The position will receive postdoctoral and graduate student support and start-up funds to develop the necessary infrastructure (e.g., computing resources, lab space) for establishing a formal environmental data science program at ESF.
Responsibilities: The new environmental data science faculty member will be expected to maintain an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program that involves data-intensive investigations of any aspect of the environment including but not limited to use of field sensor networks, remote sensing data, social networks, environmental genomics, and climate data. Initially the teaching requirement consists of two data science courses (one introductory and one advanced). Administrative responsibilities include leadership in designing and implementing an undergraduate major and graduate certificate programs in Environmental Data Science as well as developing the infrastructure to support teaching and research related to data science.
Starting Salary: $90,000 - $130,000, DOQ

Required Qualifications:
* PhD in data science, or in fields such as engineering, biology, ecology, social science, geography, and information science with commensurate experience in data science.
* Strong record of publication showcasing innovative research contributions at the intersection of data science and environmental topics.
* Ability to provide leadership in developing an environmental data science major at ESF.
* Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring in environmental data science.
* Evidence of potential to secure external funding to support research and graduate students.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with latest developments in machine learning, data mining, and artificial intelligence (e.g., large language models) relevant to environmental science applications.
* Experience fostering an inclusive environment, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research and teaching.
* Ability to establish and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including both biophysical and social scientists as well as academic and non-academic partners.
