Cal/OSHA is seeking an Associate Safety Engineer to join the team at the Cal/OSHA Asbestos and Carcinogen Unit (ACU). Under the general direction of the Principal Safety Engineer (Industrial), in the DIR, Cal/OSHA, the Associate Safety Engineer (ASE) independently performs the full range of professional, journey-level safety engineering work in the ACU. The ASE will have responsibilities for evaluating applications, monitoring operations, auditing activities, investigating complaints, and conducting outreach in the three statewide ACU programs: consultant certification, trainer approval, and contractor registration. The ASE conducts the more responsible and complex safety and health work and journey-level staff assignments related to construction, electrical, and industrial occupational safety and health in the asbestos industry.

The work will primarily occur indoors in a large office environment within a high-rise building where access is achieved by elevator. The office environment will consist of cubicles, small offices, and file storage areas. The work will involve use of typical office tools such as computers, telephones, printers, scanners, staplers and filing apparatus. The work will involve exposure to typical office noise, extensive time spent in a stationary position, and repetitive movement involving personal computers, telephones and other equipment. The work will involve frequent interaction with coworkers.
The building is located in the Sacramento Arden area. There is a bus stop right in front of the building. The building is located a few miles from Highway 80 and about 5 miles from Highway 50. There is plenty of free and secure outdoor parking around the building.The Arden area has many inexpensive places to explore for lunch, and several restaurants within walking distance, some just across the street.There is a shopping mall less than a mile away.There is also a small shopping area (Howe Bout Arden) just across the street.The building contains a break room with tables and chairs to eat lunch, along with refrigerators for storing your food. Next to the building, there are some fixed tables and chairs next to several trees that can be used for eating and breaks.
Work will require travel elsewhere in the state to training and meeting facilities. Field work could involve significantly different conditions than described above, and would primarily involve asbestos training facilities and asbestos abatement sites which could include exposure to hazards such as outdoor conditions in inclement weather, uneven terrain, heights, moving equipment, and biological, chemical and physical agents.
Required travel would occur via private vehicle, state vehicle, or public transportation (i.e. automobile, airplane, etc.) and could include overnight travel within California.
Occasionally the ASE will have to speak or make presentations to large groups.
