Job DescriptionThe Associate Vice President of Public Safety/Chief of Police provides management, leadership, and oversight for all aspects of public safety at the University. Under limited supervision, the AVP/Chief of Police plans, supervises, directs, coordinates, and implements departmental goals, policies, procedures, and activities associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors and the protection of University property.
Responsibilities:- Develops and implements goals, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures for the Public Safety unit
- Manages and oversees campus-wide police/security operations.
- Develops and maintains efficient police operations and crime prevention programs which incorporate the entire University community.
- Commands and controls law enforcement operations for major investigations, emergency management situations, and large university special events
- Review and approve all administrative actions for the University Police Department.
- Serves as the primary liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies
- Employs advanced and innovative concepts and best practices in campus law enforcement and parking management to continuously improve effectiveness and efficiency.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience: - Bachelor's degree in Criminal Science, Psychology, or Law Enforcement or related field from an accredited college of university.
- Seven years of related experience as a Certified Peace Officer including at least five years of law enforcement management experience at the rank of Lieutenant or at least five years of related experience in law enforcement at an institution of higher education.
- Possession of an appropriate certification as a peace officer in the State of Texas or an equivalent licensing entity in another state.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Knowledge of career coaching and advisement.
- Knowledge of career assessment software and career and student development theories.
- Knowledge of job market trends.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong public speaking, leadership, and management skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
- Ability to gather, correlate, and analyze information and devise solutions to administrative problems.
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work in a high stress environment.
Required Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:- Intermediate, Advanced, or Master Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission on -Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (or the ability to immediately obtain TCOLE certification).
- Certified in Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (TLETS) and CPR.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) training certification.
- Law Enforcement Leadership training, weapons, radar, and baton certifications.
- Valid Driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: - Master's degree in Criminal Science, Psychology, Law Enforcement or related field from an accredited college of university;
- Experience and knowledge in the areas of risk management, emergency management, homeland security, dignitary protection, building security and event management.
