This position will be either tenure-track or clinical track based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary team in the Animal Cancer Care & Research Center (ACCRC), within the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute's biomedical research building in Roanoke. The successful candidate will join an oncology team that includes 2 other medical oncologists, a radiation oncologist (a second radiation oncologist search is open), 2 surgical oncologists, 3 medical oncology residents, 1-2 oncology interns, 1 medical dosimetrist/radiation therapist, 1 radiation therapist/CT technician, and multiple oncology technicians and assistants. The ACCRC is equipped with a USP800 compliant chemotherapy administration suite, a 64-slice CT scanner (Siemens SOMATOM Confidence), digital radiography, ultrasonography, 3 operating rooms, and a state-of-the-art linear accelerator (Varian Edge) with stereotactic radiation therapy capabilities. Other technologies available include a small animal (rodent) PET/CT and PET/MRI, and soon a Siemens Magnetom Prisma MRI 3T scanner for clinical use. The ACCRC opened its doors in 2020 and has had a steep trajectory in clinical and research areas. The successful candidate will be instrumental in its continued growth. The ACCRC serves as a premier small animal cancer research hospital to provide exceptional, comprehensive, and compassionate cancer care. ACCRC aims to distinguish itself nationally by growing the nexus between human and veterinary medical clinical and translational research. Its strategic placement physically within the Roanoke biomedical campus, and functionally at the core of the Virginia Tech's Cancer Research Alliance, will provide excellent opportunities for professional growth of the successful candidate. Roanoke is the largest city in southwest Virginia and is 45 minutes from Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg. There are regularly scheduled shuttles with Wi-Fi that travel between the Blacksburg and Roanoke campuses.   • The primary job responsibility will be to contribute to the growth of the clinical service, which has emphasis on translational research.
  • Research responsibilities will vary based on the interest and qualification of the candidate but may include contribution to collaborative and translational research involving, but not limited to, veterinary clinicians, physicians, and medical and scientific researchers.
  • Additional service responsibilities include consultations with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg and outside referring veterinarians, participate in continuing education programs of the College and participate in faculty governance activities.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include participation in didactic instruction in oncology. Clinical instruction will be directed toward professional DVM students, interns, residents and graduate students from various disciplines, as well as laboratory instruction, where applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • DVM or equivalent foreign degree by the date of hire degree
  • Completion of an approved American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - medical oncology residency (ACVIM-Oncology) program by the date of hire.
  • An ability and interest in fostering diversity in the curriculum and department
  • Occasional travel to attend professional conferences and meetings
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be eligible for a Virginia faculty veterinary license by the date of hire
  • The success candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check
