TITLE: ATHLETIC TRAINER

REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Athletics
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform the role of a certified athletic trainer.
Provide and assist coaches with preventative programs as needed, including: physical conditioning; environmental safety and physical hazards; equipment safety; and athletic training and counseling.
Provide athletic injury management, including: injury recognition; functional capacity evaluation; acute care, including emergency first aid; supervised rehabilitation; and concussion recognition and management.
Maintain an accurate log of injuries, treatments, progress and outcome.
Apply and assist athletes in applying protective taping, wraps, bracing, and dressings.
Make appropriate medical referrals when indicated and provide sound counsel to athletes and parents in seeking proper medical assistance and follow-up.
Develop and maintain protocols for emergency care, with the approval of the School Nurse and School Medical Inspector/School Physician, keeping coaches informed of the Emergency Action Plan for all sports. Create medical timeouts for each coach according to their facility.
Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the School Nurse and other health care professionals.
Advocate the position that all student athletes must put academics first.
Work with the instructional staff in developing curriculum, modifying Instruction and selecting the materials used to meet the State Core Curriculum Content Standards for a comprehensive health education program.
Responsible for the requisition of the necessary medical supplies in accordance with the school budget.
Ensure that the training room and any other facility Involved in the high school sports medicine program are maintained in an orderly, functional and sanitary manner.
Conduct or provide health related staff development sessions for coaches and school personnel, and educational programs for parents.
Attend athletic events as directed by the Athletic Director.
Maintain an inventory of training supplies.
Maintain in safe working condition and operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.
Create and maintain Family ID registration for eligibility lists for each sport.
Maintain a daily log of training room use and records of treatment.
File insurance claims and other required reports in a timely fashion.
Notify immediately appropriate personnel of any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, potential suicide, or Individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
Advocate a healthy and responsible life style by educating students on the harmful effects of substances (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, controlled substances and ergogenic aids), total physical fitness, and healthy habits for a lifetime of vigorous living.
Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
Protect confidentiality of records and information about students and staff, and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines.
Any other duties as required by the Athletic Director or Superintendent of Schools, or his/her designee.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience
Bachelor's Degree
Licensure by Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professionals
Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainer's Association Bureau of Certification
First Aid Certification and CPR Certification
Valid driver's license with no serious violations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Good moral character in working with student athletes and staff
Interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, the community, and health professionals and agencies
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
Ability to perform simple clerical tasks
Ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications
Such alternatives to listed qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

ADA & MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mop, buffer, snow blower, shovel, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 15 pounds of force, and enough force to constantly to lift up to 35 pounds, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move small and large objects. Work requires walking, standing, kneeling, squatting to a significant degree.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to staff, students, parents, and visitors.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving Instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words) and hear (perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone or radio.
