Athletic trainers provide consultation, advice, referrals, care and management of athletic injury and illness to SUNY Cortland Intercollegiate Athletes. A primary role of the athletic trainer is to work as member of the medical staff in providing prevention, preconditioning, conditioning, treatment, care, and rehabilitation for intercollegiate athletes. Athletic Trainers will work as a preceptor in the

CAATE- accredited athletic training program. Annual 10 - month obligation dates are 8/01-5/31.

Major Responsibilities

* Work within the team of medical staff to provide care and management of injuries and illnesses including: prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation for intercollegiate athletes.

* Document, track and maintain medical charts and report injuries.

* Communicate with physicians, coaching staff and head athletic trainer regarding injury status of athletes.

* Assist with the organization and administration of all pre-participation physicals with physicians; coordinate medical clearance and eligibility for practice and competition.

* Minimize risk of injury through education to increase awareness and prevention.

* Serve as a preceptor for athletic training students at clinical sites.

* Supervise field experience, provide hands-on field experience training and clinical instruction.

* Travel with intercollegiate athletic teams as assigned by the head athletic trainer.

* Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and holidays as contest and practice requires.

* Serve as a preceptor for athletic training students at clinical sites.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's)

* Must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required.

* Interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situation when talking to athletes, coaches, medical professionals, other staff and families.

* Decision-making skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.

* Attention to detail: Athletic trainers should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.

* Ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

* Commitment to inclusive excellence: Desire to contribute and commitment to culture of inclusion, equity, diversity and social justice. Desire to work with student athletes from diverse backgrounds.

* Passion for exercise and sport with well-developed understanding of the complexities of the clinical fields and intercollegiate athletics.

* Commitment to SUNY Cortland's CAATE accredited athletic training program, which emphasizes experiential learning and is committed to the practice-to-theory-to-practice model of teaching.

* Commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of background and to educating students to become global citizens.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

* Reports to the Head Athletic Trainer

* Works closely with physicians and coaching staff

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's or Master's degree from a professional athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

* Clinical or work experience in the practice of college or university athletic training service

* Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification

* New York State license as a Certified Athletic Trainer, or eligible upon appointment

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree from a professional athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

* College or university athletic training service professional experience with a collision sport.

* College or university athletic trainer preceptor experience

* 2 or more years of post-certification/licensure professional experience

* Current New York State license as a Certified Athletic Trainer
