Athletic Trainer Job Description REPORTS TO: The Athletic Director, County Athletic Director, Principal, Assistant Superintendent of Operations
JOB PURPOSE: The Athletic Trainer provides care to clients in need of sports related rehabilitation services in various settings. This person is responsible for the care of injured athletes from adolescents to geriatrics at community sporting events and on the practice and playing fields. The Athletic Trainer administers immediate first aid and develops a treatment program based on the nature of the injury. The Athletic Trainer communicates with the injured athlete, physician, coach, and family as appropriate.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or related field such as Health, Physical, Education or Exercise Science. Master's degree preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Successful experience as an ahtletic trainer
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW: Current certification from the National Athletic Trainer's Association; Current Athletic Trainer license in State of Georgia; and BLS certification through AHA is required.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with a variety of sports programs preferred.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Develop plans for providing athletic training coverage at all interscholastic athletic events.
- Admininsters IMPACT test to all athletes.
- Help organize and plan All School Physicals with the Athletic Director.
- Establish and maintain a budget for athletic training program.
- Establish daily hours of operation for the athletic training facility.
- Help in developing a comprehensive venue and conditions specific emergency action plans.
- Initiate and administer an athletic training student-aide program in accordance with the school's athletic guidelines and state law.
- Appropriately assesses and examines athletes with varying diagnoses according to the Athletic Training scope of practice
- Treats Athletes within the ATC scope of practice
- Provides education to students, caregivers, coaches, etc. regarding athletic injuries and care
- Completes documentation of Athletic Injuries (via injury report and coaches notes) Sent to appropriate coaches weekly
- Maintain adequate medical records on all injuries and rehabilitation procedures.
- Develop coach's professional development for CPR/AED, Concussion, Heat Illness, and Sudden Cardiac Death.
- Maintains Athletic training supplies and equipment
- Promotes Gilmer High Athletics by working positively with students, caregivers, coaches, designated team physician/community physicians, school nursing staff, and faculty
- Participates in other high school events as appropriate to help promote the sports medicine program
- Assumes responsibility for completing all assignments and tasks in a timely and cost efficient manner
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES - Ability to work with employees, school staff, patients, physicians, visitors in a hospitable and professional manner.
- Applied Knowledge: Athletic trainers must have knowledge about a large range of medical problems. Assessment and evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be needed.
- Decision Making Skills: Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
- Attention to Detail: should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff, and families.
- Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.
- Excellent communication, presentation and critical thinking skills.
- Works effectively and cooperatively in groups/teams (departmental and cross functional) using performance improvement techniques when appropriate to continuously improve work processes.
- Must be a self-starter who displays a high degree of accountability and follow through.
- Knowledge of basic training program principles for all sports offered at assigned school.
- Knowledge of First Aid.
- Knowledge of adolescent growth and development, medical terminology, universal precautions, and lifting techniques.
