Location: Palmer,MA, USA
This is a 12 month (210 day) position focused on providing training and wellness support to the entire school district, including: sports teams, physical education classes, and other curricular & extracurricular programming. This position will report to the High School Principal and work primarily with Athletics, Special Services, and Work-Study/Internship programs. This position will work a self-directed flexible schedule with the understanding that during the school year much of the expected time will be spent at extracurricular events in the afternoon/evening, including some weekend work. Applicants must possess a current valid Massachusetts Athletic Trainer (AT) license to be considered for this position.
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
1. Injury/illness prevention and wellness protection
a. Pre-screening of participant conditions
b. Develop injury prevention strategies
c. Ensure adequate hydration is provided to participants during events
d. Oversee and administer baseline concussion testing
e. Monitor weather conditions and safety
f. Provide nutritional advice to students and staff
g. Oversee and supervise strength training programs
h. Develop fitness protocols for strength and conditioning
2. Clinical evaluation and diagnosis
a. Evaluate and treat emergency, acute, and chronic conditions
b. Determine where referral is necessary
3. Immediate and emergency care
a. Provide medical coverage for events including games and practices
b. Provide first aid services where necessary
4. Treatment and rehabilitation
a. Oversee and manage concussion return to play
b. Recondition participants for optimal performance and function
c. Implement and utilize therapeutic modalities
d. Develop and implement rehabilitative programs
5. Organizational and professional health and well-being
a. Communicate with physicians, parents, coaches, and administration where appropriate regarding student care
b. Develop sports medicine policies and procedures
c. Order necessary supplies and maintain event training facility
d. Develop and implement emergency action plans
e. Maintain electronic medical records & documentation of injuries
6. Provide Workshops and Programming around Health & Wellness
a. Develop a Healthy Habits program for students
b. Provide coaches and teachers training in injury recognition and protocols
c. Support Summer Programming through classroom wellness programs and cooperative programming
d. Develop fitness programming and activities for students in summer programming
7. Develop and administer internship and work-study programs
a. Oversee up to 3 student workers/interns per semester
b. Build curricular and hands-on learning programs around sports medicine and wellness.
c. Provide grading and evaluative feedback on interns and work-study participants
d. Develop external relationships with prospective partners for student interns, work-study participants, and graduates.
