Athletic Trainer

Position Summary

The athletic trainer is responsible for the prevention of athletic injuries, the maintenance of the health, well-being and the recuperation and rehabilitation, to the extent possible, following illness, injury, or surgery of all University student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Work under the supervision of the University Athletic Director and in direct contact with the Team Physician with the aim of fielding a healthy squad.

* Attend all home team sporting events to prepare athletes for competition and be available to provide assistance during events.

* Take appropriate steps to, to the extent possible, prevent athletic injuries, maintain the health, well-being, and, following illness, injury or surgery, promote recuperation and rehabilitation of university student-athletes.

* Communicate directly with Head Coach(es) on a daily basis or as required.

* Secure bid proposals, place orders, and maintain inventory of sports medicine modalities and supplies for use during the pre-season, regular season and post-season.

* Work within the budget designated by the University administration when ordering sports medicine supplies.

* Organize and implement off-season training programs for student-athletes in consultation with the Head Coach of a sport, as time permits and interest warrants.

* Prepare an annual budget for administrative approval.

* Oversee operation of treatment headquarters including the modalities, equipment and supplies used. Maintains general cleanliness of these areas.

* Prepare the student athletes for each practice and game by exercising, preventative taping and bandaging, and providing guidance relative to the team warm-up and flexibility period.

* Work with the Team Physician in the planning, organization and implementation of pre-season and post-season physical examinations of student-athletes.

* Work with the Team Physician and Head Coach(es) to determine when it is medically safe for an ill or injured athlete to return to competition.

* Actively participate in the direction and implementation of rehabilitation of injured student athletes following an athletic injury or surgery. To the degree possible within the capabilities and control of the Athletic Trainer, ensure that such rehabilitation occurs on-site.

* Ensure that the following services are provided/coordinated in a timely and sequential manner:

* Provision of first-aid/medical attention at the onset of injury

* Acquisition of a diagnosis by the Team Physician

* Implementation of conservative or surgical procedures necessary to provide the best possible recovery

* Management of a reconditioning program aimed at restoring the injured athlete to his/her pre-injury fitness level or a level determined by the Team Physician which allows the athlete to return to competition.

* Provide accurate and thorough keeping of daily injury records on student-athletes.

* Dispense selected medication to student-athletes according to standing orders provided by a Physician.

* Remain active in professional organizations to remain well-informed of new standards and techniques.

Skills and Abilities

* Demonstrate ability to interact well with all parties involved in the care of student-athletes.

* Use good judgment in responding to emergency (injury) situations as well as in the ongoing care of student-athletes.

* Demonstrates technical proficiency and in carrying out Trainer duties

* Demonstrate ability to form healthy relationships with higher education students.

Required Education and Experience

* Bachelor's Degree in Health & Physical Education or related field

* Licensed Athletic Trainer (state) and Certified Athletic Trainer (national).
