Do you have accounting or auditing experience and meticulous eye for detail? The Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Unemployment is seeking a Compliance Auditor to review employer's payroll and financial records to ensure proper worker status and accuracy of employee wage reporting.
We offer a flexible hybrid remote and in office work schedule.
Primary responsibilities include:
+ Examines and analyzes employer financial records to determine contributions due, reconcile findings on previously submitted reports, and determine the correct amount of any interest and penalties due or overpaid.
+ Prepares audit reports and assembles audit schedules, tables, exhibits, and documentation to present audit findings and conclusions.
+ Consults, advises, and instructs employers to maintain and increase compliance with Employment Security law and to promote employer relations.
+ Conducts independent and complex audits of subject employers to determine accuracy of reporting to the department and compliance with laws, rules regulations and procedures.
+ Collaborates with Employer services managers and staff to create or improve processes within the Division of Employer Services and to identify tools and/or methods to identify misclassified wages.

+ Critical thinking: interpret the story behind the numbers and devise strategies and find solutions to problems.
+ Problem-solving skills: Finding corrective actions for a range of potential issues that may discovered during an audit.
+ Adaptability: Adjusting to new financial regulations and audit methodologies as needed.
+ Technical proficiency: Understanding of accounting and payroll software, and Excel for complex data analysis.
+ Teamwork: Working with peers to conduct thorough audits and with clients to obtain and verify financial information.
Minimum qualifications:
A Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field and two (2) years experience in accounting/auditing -OR- a six (6) year combination of education, training, and/or experience at a professional auditing or accounting level - OR- a 5 year combination of education, training, and/or experience at a professional auditing or accounting level which includes one year experience at the Auditor I level.
