The job requires a wide knowledge of intervention and classroom techniques. It is expected the teacher has the ability to effectively use a variety of teaching methods and materials applicable to autistically impaired students. DISTRICT OVERVIEW: Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,200 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $176 million, with a state funding of $9,600 per pupil. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide effective individualized instruction that is based on established learning theory and the elements of effective instruction.
  • Use appropriate motivational and classroom/behavior management for autistically impaired students.
  • Provide classroom instruction in the following skill areas: self-care and grooming, essential elements, activities of daily living, social/emotional development, leisure time, personal adjustment, and work skills.
  • Provide appropriate monitoring and evaluation to insure effective instruction.
  • Implement daily activities consistent with an understanding of the developmental needs of the student.
  • Initiate and maintain effective parent and community relationships.
  • Develop understanding of the students' long-term needs and provide specific skill building related to community-based instruction.
  • Have a working knowledge of current special education teaching methods.
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to develop a collaborative relationship with local and county consultants.
  • Develop and provide functional communication systems and assistive technology expertise for students.
  • Demonstrate ability in the development of behavior plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: It is preferred that the teacher of the autistically impaired have full approval as a teacher of the autistically impaired. Applicants with full approval in special education who are able to be temporarily approved as a teacher of the autistically impaired will be considered. In order to secure temporary approval, an applicant must enroll or be enrolled in a university training program for teachers of the autistically impaired and demonstrate commitment to securing full approval as soon as possible. He/she must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and staff members. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The teacher of the autistically impaired is part of the Department of Student Services.
