SUMMARYThe City of Opa-locka is seeking, an individual Performs skilled preventive maintenance service, diagnosis and repairs of automobiles by inspecting and maintaining city operated vehicles.NATURE OF WORKAn employee in the classification shall perform diagnostic repair and preventative maintenance work on automobiles, light duty trucks, and other specialized automotive equipment employed in grounds maintenance work. An employee in this classification must be able to conduct and perform all types of diagnostics and preventative maintenance activities on automotive equipment. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion. Employees in this class may supervise the work of a small number of Auto Mechanics assisting in repair or service work. This position reports to the Operations Manager.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Keeps equipment available for use by inspecting, testing vehicles, completing preventive maintenance, including but not limited to engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation, wheel balancing and replacing filters.
- Maintains vehicle functional/performance condition by listening to operator's complaints; conduction inspections; repairing engine failures, repairing mechanical, electrical and electronics systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components and repairing body damages.
- Complies with state vehicles requirements by testing engine safety and combustion control standards.
- Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance and calling for the repairs.
- Keeps vehicles daily maintenance record and documentation of vehicle repairs and services.
- Contains costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.
- Maintains shop safety and precautions.
- Must reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions; they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLSConsiderable knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive vehicles and specialized automotive equipment.
- Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of all types of mechanical shop tools and scanning equipment such as the Rotunda Scanner, Tech 1 and Tech 2 digital multi-meter, battery alternator tester, engine analyzer, alignment equipment, coolant system, anti-freezer recycler, R12 and R134 A/C equipment, varied related automotive equipment used in the diagnoses, repair and preventative maintenance of vehicles.
- Knowledge and understanding of the latest automotive computer diagnostic equipment and other commonly used analyzers.
- Ability to direct and supervise a small group of auto mechanic helpers and other semiskilled or unskilled workers, as assigned.
- Ability to prepare accurate records of repair and service operations and complete reports.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude, coordination and dexterity. Good physical condition and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles
- Knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods
- Ability to handle various tools (e.g. pliers) and heavy equipment (e.g. lift)
- Knowledge of all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals etc
- Knowledge of diesel and gas engine repairs and maintenance
EDUCATIONHigh School diploma or EquivalentORGeneral shop and auto repair courses and considerable experience in the repairs and maintenance of automotive equipment.EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGCompletion of a training program at high school or vocational level in the area of Automotive Mechanics with a minimum number of 1,080 clock hoursORASE certificatesORAutomotive Manufactures certificates in varied automotive repair specialties (preferably within a 5-year period) and considerable (2 - 4 years) experience performing a variety of automotive repairs.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSAutomobile Service Excellence (ASE) CertifiedA valid State of Florida Driver's License a must.EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGAny equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job, may be substituted for evaluation at the discretion of the City.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this class.
