Description
Under general supervision, on an assigned shift, works with and supervises a group of mechanics and others engaged in supervising and maintaining automobiles, trucks, tractors, coaches and other/or automotive equipment; or is individually responsible for the inspection of automotive to determine the required repairs or the adequacy of completed repairs.
Examples of Duties
On an assigned shift:
1. Supervises and works with a group of mechanics and others engaged in inspecting, repairing, lubricating and servicing automotive equipment and repairing or replacing defective automotive units or parts such as motors, generators, starters, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, axles, brakes and steering gears.
2. Assigns work and inspects work in process and upon completion
3. Ensures that required supplies are available.
4. Instructs workers on safe and efficient work methods.
5. Prepares basic records and reports of activities supervised.
6. Performs any supervised duties, as required.
In a large auto repair garage or shop:
1. Performs preliminary and/or final inspection of all equipment sent in for repairs.
2. Locates and determines the nature of mechanical and electrical defects and writes work orders.
3. Determines the timing of specific repairs.
4. Estimates time and material requirements and the total cost of repairs jobs.
5. Monitors the operation of motor and chassis units and makes appropriate adjustments.
6. Prepares inspection reports.
In a small auto repair shop:
1. Assumes responsibility for a fleet of automotive vehicles.
2. Supervises a group of mechanics and others engaged in servicing and lubricating automotive equipment and making repairs to motor and chassis units.
3. Determines what repairs are to be made.
4. Assigns work and inspects work in process and upon completion.
5. Orders required materials and parts
6. Instructs workers on safe and efficient work methods.
7. Prepares cost estimates, activity reports and maintains basic records.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation or GED with successful completion of coursework in shop and auto repair work.
Four years experience in repairing and overhauling automotive equipment with one year of experience supervising or instructing others in the repair of such equipment.
Valid State of Michigan Operator License required at the time of application. Individuals subsequently certified or promoted to this classification shall be required to obtain a State of Michigan Chauffeur's License with a Class 1 or 2 endorsement, or a Commercial Driver License with a Group A endorsement and Air Brake Qualification.
Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner's Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act - 1988.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
