CITY OF MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION CLASSIFICATION TITLE: AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to perform routine maintenance work on all City-owned mechanical equipment and vehicles. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Ensures compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment, vehicles and other machinery. Inspects, tests and diagnoses engine components and systems. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with servicing, repairing, maintaining and testing equipment and vehicles. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, Determines amount of materials required for projects; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools, or supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; receives/distributes incoming supply shipments. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, service representatives, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, time sheets, repair tickets, repair records, fuel usage records, odometer readings, warranty records, or other documentation of service activities; forwards, retains, or files, as appropriate. Receives various forms, reports, work orders, maintenance reports, equipment specifications, schematics, bulletins, recalls, safety reports, manuals, policies, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Operates a personal computer, a variety of machinery, equipment, tools, and diagnostic equipment to complete essential functions to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Maintains outside grounds and car wash. Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned. High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in vehicle repair and maintenance. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred. Vocational or technical training in automotive repair preferred. ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability : Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors : Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
