Automotive/Equipment Technician I/II:Responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and/or small engines, ensuring minimal downtime.Automotive/Equipment Technician III:Responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and/or small engines, ensuring minimal downtime. Also responsible for performing lead worker functions in the training and guidance of Automotive/Equipment Technicians I and II. The starting rate for this position, depending on tier qualifications is as follows:Automotive/Equipment Technician I: $23.35 - $32.11 per hour, DOQAutomotive/Equipment Technician II: $27.02 - $37.15 per hour, DOQAutomotive/Equipment Technician III: $29.79 - $40.96 per hour, DOQ Position is open until filled and may close at any time.Essential Job FunctionsAutomotive/Equipment Technician I/II Responsibilities:
- Diagnoses and repairs vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment, including overhauling major components like engines, transmissions, brakes, and hydraulic systems. Utilizes scan tools, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic charts for troubleshooting.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance (oil changes, brake replacements, engine tuning, and tire services) and maintains an inventory of parts and supplies.
- Conducts state and government vehicle inspections, performs body work, and ensures road safety through test drives.
- Handles field repairs, reviews work orders, and documents repairs in the system.
- Operates various vehicles and machinery, and uses tools such as welders, plasma cutters, and diagnostic equipment.
- Works with coworkers, vendors, and the public to coordinate repairs.
Automotive/Equipment Technician III performs same duties as above along with the following:
- Installs and repairs police vehicle systems, snow removal equipment, and re-programs vehicle control computers.
- Re-programs vehicle control computers: Installs, re-programs and repairs Geographical Positioning Systems (GPS) in a variety of City owned vehicles.
- Installs and repairs snow plows and snow removal equipment. Installs and repairs hydraulic plow systems
- Reviews work orders to ensure repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner: Trains and oversees work of Technician I and II employees.
Minimum Required Qualifications Automotive/Equipment Technician I:
- High School diploma or GED required
- Vocational training or a technical degree in Automotive/Equipment Technology
- One year of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment
- Valid Virginia Driver's License required
- Must possess or be able to obtain within five months of hire:
- Class A or B commercial driver's license
- Preference may be given to individuals who possess:
- Certified Safety Inspector License
- Certified Emissions Inspector License
- ASE Certification are preferred
Automotive/Equipment Technician II:
- High School diploma or GED required
- Vocational training or a technical degree in Automotive/Equipment Technology
- Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment
- Valid Virginia Driver's License required
- Must possess or be able to obtain within five months of hire:
- Class A or B commercial driver's license
- Certified Safety Inspector License
- Certified Emissions Inspector License
- ASE Certification in a minimum of three areas (engines, brakes, electrical; either car or truck)

For all positions:An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for this position may be considered. Special Requirements Schedule will either be: Monday - Thursday 6:00am - 4:30pm, or Tuesday - Friday, 6:00am - 4:30pm.
