Summary:

The AVP, Foundation and Government Support oversees Safe Horizon s foundation and government strategy with an ambitious private revenue goal. The AVP will manage all foundation and government revenue operations ensuring timely and accurate planning, design, production and submission of proposals and grant reports from foundation and government funders. They will steward existing foundation donors as well as identify new private funding opportunities and cultivate prospective donors. The AVP will proactively bring creative ideas, solutions, and approaches to raising Safe Horizon s profile and building lasting funder relationships. This position supervises three direct reports.They will work closely with the Chief Development and Communications Officer and members of Safe Horizon s Senior and Program Teams. The ability to coordinate and manage relationships and projects with multiple stakeholders is essential, as is a strong engagement and commitment to Safe Horizon organizational values and vision. Responsibilities:

  • Builds and executes the foundation workplan (new and existing supporters) and government workplan (procurement of new solicitations/RFPs and positioning for future potential government funding);
  • Supervises three direct reports. Oversees and leads the foundation proposal, report, and renewal process for private foundations across the team, including liaising with Program to gather narrative and statistical information and with Finance to ensure timely and accurate program/project budgets;
  • Assigns submissions and projects to other staff on the team, and supports staff in their approach, design, editing, and strategy.
  • Takes the lead in planning, program design, and field research to support optimal positioning and competitiveness for Safe Horizon in upcoming funding opportunities;
  • With the team, identifies prospective private foundation donors for specific Safe Horizon programs, or general support. Guides strategic decisions related to how we pitch, position, choose, shape, or design ideas/programs for funding according to funder interest and context.
  • Monitor online and print publications for government RFP s and their deadlines and assure timely and accurate reporting of foundation and government grants; ensure that program staff are aware of new funding opportunities as appropriate
  • Maintains a portfolio of key foundation and government funders. Researches, designs, develops, writes, reviews, and edits draft copy and produces and submits final proposals and reports;
  • Oversees a grants calendar within Salesforce, ensuring that team deadlines are met and all necessary follow up takes places to the overall donor cultivations/stewardship process;
  • Proactively cultivates relationships with existing and prospective donors through discussion, correspondence, meetings, and tours of Safe Horizon facilities;
  • Monitors online and print publications for foundation news, industry trends, and public and private requests for proposals, evaluating them for relevance to Safe Horizon s mission and programs;
  • Manages the CEO, CDCO, and Board s relationships with key foundation donors and works with individual donors and other community members as necessary to identify and cultivate foundation donors;
  • Oversees contract process and Legal Department approval for private grants;
  • Assists the CDCO by providing guidance and input on leadership of the team, management of important funder relationships, and other key areas;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of fundraising experience preferably from public and private sources, including leadership roles within a sophisticated fundraising operation at a nonprofit or similar.
  • Demonstrated history of successfully charting and achieving fundraising goals.
  • Strong working knowledge of local and national foundation donors, government systems, and funding trends;
  • Experience with budget preparation and/or analysis the ability to review budgets and ensure alignment with the funder s interests and the proposal narrative;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), including strong presentation and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under stress, manage a number of demanding and conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines with well-crafted proposals and reports;
  • Sophisticated data management and research skills
  • Advanced, superior writing skills the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to capture the purpose, importance, and impact of programs and projects with an emphasis on effective structure, grammar, succinctness, and alignment with foundations giving interests;
  • Excellent project management and relationship management skills;
  • Sophisticated knowledge of the victim services or parallel social justice field, with the ability to contribute to programmatic decisions related to grants;
  • Strong engagement with agency values of trauma-informed practice, anti-racism, Client-Centered Practice, etc., with the ability to integrate agency values into leadership, strategy, grant design, and writing;
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce (or comparable donor database) and MS Suite
  • Two years of more of experience in a supervisory role is strongly preferred
  • Bachelor s degree or equivalent experience; background in social justice or human services preferred.
  • Ability to travel within New York City as needed.
