Job DetailsJob Location Backcountry Wilderness Area Base Camp - Littleton, CO Position Type Full Time Salary Range $71,565.00 - $79,040.00 Salary Job Category Backcountry Wilderness Area DescriptionGeneral Statement of Duties: The Backcountry Wilderness Area is a 8,200 acre conservation area just south of Highlands Ranch, dedicated to providing outdoor recreation and environmental education opportunities while preserving a significant portion of the 13-square-mile property for wildlife. The Backcountry Wilderness Area Property and Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operational integrity of various amenities within the property, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. Amenities Include: Base Camp, Horse Corrals, Archery Range, and natural surface trails. Supervision Received: Reports to the Backcountry Director Supervision Exercised: Manages Property/Maintenance Coordinator, Property/Maintenance Specialists, other Property part-time staff, and volunteers. Ideal candidate: Will have experience in ranch/conservation property operations and maintenance or similar, experience managing people and working within a team environment, natural resource knowledge and experience, and experience operating and maintaining large equipment such as tractors, skid steers, trucks, trailers, mowers, etc. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.
  • Amenity Management:
    • This position performs a variety of duties associated with the management, supervision, care, administration, and maintenance of the Backcountry Wilderness Area land in general, but critically, several amenities within the Backcountry Wilderness Area including:
    • Base Camp: Our headquarters but also the place where customers arrive for various programs in the Backcountry Wilderness Area that include summer camp for 150 kids/week, nature hikes, and much more.
    • Horse Corrals: Equine programs such as horse camp, lessons, and trail rides take place from our horse corrals where we have 20 owned horses year around and 20 more leased horses during the summer months.
    • Archery Range: Includes a static and 3D range with 28 3D targets.
    • Natural Surface Trails: 14 miles of natural surface trails in the northern section of the Backcountry.
  • Infrastructure Maintenance:
    • Maintain outbuildings, sheds, different types of fencing, roads, parking lots, shade structures, corrals, irrigation systems, wells, signage and other essential infrastructure.
    • Ensure all amenities are well maintained, safe, and ready for customers' use, including care of elements like tables, benches, canopy tents, archery targets, portable toilets, and more.
  • Equipment Management:
    • Maintain and operate large equipment such as trucks, trailers, mowers, skid steers, UTVs, ATVs, hand tools, snowplows, and other machinery essential for property upkeep.
    • Perform regular maintenance, including oil changes, tire care, basic repairs, and preventive measures. Coordinate with outside vendors as needed.
  • Natural Resource Management:
    • Conduct tasks such as trail maintenance, vegetation management and weed control such as mowing, trimming, and spraying as well as, brush clearing, and fire mitigation.
    • Assist with the implementation of elk, deer, and turkey hunting programs, including guiding hunters.
  • Emergency Response and Land Protection:
    • Assist in emergency response to emergencies like wildfires, livestock escapes, and medical incidents, providing safe and efficient assistance to patients and first responders.
    • Protect the land and amenities from trespassing and theft through regular monitoring, patrolling, and appropriate engagement with violators.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Exercise sound judgment in managing over 8,000 acres and valuable capital assets.
    • Develop, enforce, and execute management policies and procedures to ensure best practices are followed and safety of staff and customers is ensured.
    • Manage budgets, contracts, inventory, and supervision of contractors, ensuring effective operations within set financial constraints.
    • Oversee the work of contractors in areas like weed spraying, restoration, and construction.
  • Team and Volunteer Management:
    • Lead and manage the Property/Maintenance team, including full-time, part-time, and volunteer staff.
    • Collaborate with the Backcountry Director and other coordinators to achieve program goals and manage the Backcountry property.
    • Assist with program management, marketing, event setup, cleanup, and livestock care.
  • Perform related duties as assigned and required
QualificationsRequired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge in natural resource management, outdoor recreation, and property maintenance.
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining large equipment such as tractors, mowers, ATVs, and UTVs.
  • Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to make independent decisions in dynamic environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Knowledge of outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and hunting, as well as native wildlife and plants.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to perform maintenance tasks, handy, willing to work with hands and perform manual labor
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain equipment such as mowers, tractors, trucks, atvs, utvs, and more
  • Comfortable around horses and other livestock
  • Ability to be trained in CPR/First-Aid and/or Wilderness First Aid
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as management plans, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, manufacturer labels, and procedure manuals
  • Efficient and competent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and web-site content management, etc.
Physical and Environmental Standards:
  • Work is mostly outdoors with minimal time indoors.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in any weather condition, including adverse weather. However, must be adaptable to office environments with prevalent noise and interruptions.
  • Physical demands include walking on uneven terrain for several miles at a time, standing for long periods of time, sitting, crouching, kneeling, bending, stopping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying heavy objects up to 60 pounds unassisted, and performing various manual labor tasks.
  • Vision requirements include near and far acuity.
  • Manual dexterity is needed for typing, writing, manual labor tasks, and answering the phone. Ability to talk and hear via telephone and face-to-face communication is essential.
