Position DetailsPosition Information Position Title Outdoor Leadership - Faculty Position Classification Faculty Employment Type Full-Time Benefits Limited-Term Benefitted Department Natural Sciences Summary To support the instruction and mentoring of a new undergraduate program in outdoor leadership studies.Duties
Teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in the outdoor leadership minor, including field based courses.May plan, develop, and implement course curricula for inclusion in a baccalaureate program in outdoor leadership studies, including field-based courses.Develops syllabi and maintains materials and supplies for field-based courses.Follows risk management policies and procedures established for university outdoor programming.Mentor students for outdoor leadership and related programs and degree plans.Broadens knowledge of teaching methods, techniques and skills and maintains a supportive environment with students, other faculty and staff and supports the development of an empowering work environment.Collaborate with the university's co-curricular Outdoor Program to develop programming and promote recruitment into the degree-granting program.Conducts research program or other scholarship activities suitable to a small, teaching university that accommodates the inclusion of undergraduate students.Provides professional contributions within areas of expertise as appropriate.Participates in departmental and University committees and special projects.Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.Performs other duties as assigned. Education/Background A master's degree in any field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline or a directly related subfield. Demonstrated experience teaching outdoor curricula in outdoor settings. Ph.D. preferred with demonstrated teaching experience in higher education. Experience with college/ university outdoor programs. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.Job Knowledge Must possess a broad background in outdoor education and working knowledge of practices and approaches to build environmental literacy, social justice, and foster land stewardship. Familiarity with professional organizations including the Association for Experiential Education, Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education, the Wilderness Education Association, National Outdoor Leadership School, Outward Bound, National Recreation and Park Association and others. Working knowledge of accreditation standards for adventure programs. Must model professional standards of practice in the outdoor industry. Experience working with diverse groups. Experience working with first-generation students in small classroom and remote field environments. Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations) Normal classroom and field environments. May travel some within the community when needed. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/ conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, and prolonged sitting. Required to work in outdoor settings, possibly over multiple days, or additional hours. Frequent exposure to harsh outdoor conditions in a variety of terrains, in all seasons.Other Requirements a. Must be current in wilderness first responder and CPR/AED/Epinephrine certified or higher medical certification at time of hire.b. Must hold industry recognized certification(s) appropriate for specialized instruction in field experiences and activities (ACA, SPI/AMGA, etc.).c. Requires a valid New Mexico driver's license.d. Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of hire date.Location Silver City Salary Range $58,477 Length of Contract 9/10 Months Advertising Summary
