Degrees $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate). $200/ year for applicable experience. Summary: The role of the Basic Skills Instructor (BSI) is to facilitate a successful mathematics and literacy support program by planning a variety of activities and exercises to help students improve their mathematics and literacy skills. The goal is to provide targeted support and instruction that cultivates enhanced reading and mathematics achievement for all students. The Basic Skills Program provides support for students who have literacy and mathematics difficulties compared to their age and developmental level. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • New York Standard Teaching Certification
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivational techniques.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the use of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as, but not limited to, word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications.
  • Possess a valid driver's license preferred.
  • Prior to employment, the following must be addressed:
  • Required to complete a criminal history background check to prove that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person's offense.

Performance Responsibilities Literacy and Mathematics Support The Basic Skills Instructor will:
  • Plan targeted lessons aligned to the current Balanced Literacy and mathematics programs to support reading and mathematics growth.
  • Collaborate with grade teachers to establish optimal support for students and assess their development needs.
  • Provide intensive small group instruction to students who are not at benchmark level.
  • Provide support to students during various periods throughout the school day, excluding all specials classes.
  • Communicate with the school director and assistant director of academics to report student progress.
  • Generate progress reports based on assessment data.
  • Create a print-rich literacy environment, including a word wall and phonics anchor charts in order to facilitate literacy learning.
  • Attend professional development workshops to gain knowledge of best practices for reading and mathematics instruction.
  • Support the professional development of classroom teachers in respect to supporting the needs of all students with a range of backgrounds in their mixed ability classrooms.
Assessment and Data The analysis of data from screening, progress monitoring and diagnostic assessments informs instructional planning for BSI students. The Basic Skills Instructor will:
  • Administer screening assessments at the beginning of the school year to all K-3 students and analyze the data to identify students that have difficulties in reading and/or mathematics and may need additional support or intervention.
  • Administer progress monitoring assessments to the BSI students to measure student progress at intervals throughout the school year and analyze the data to determine the effectiveness of the intervention instruction and modify instruction as needed.
  • Administer individual diagnostic assessments as needed in order to gain additional data on student progress. Diagnostic measures are administered to students with severe reading difficulties to support instructional planning when standard intervention programs of increasing intensity have not been successful.
  • Administer end of year assessments and provide information on student progress in reading and mathematics.
  • Analyze data to determine decisions concerning focus, grouping, time, intensity, programs and approaches for each student.
  • Organize data to ensure that it is easily accessible in order to be used for planning.
  • Share data in a timely manner with the school director, assistant director of academics, chief academic officer and K-3 program director.
Communication Ongoing formal and informal communication and collaboration among staff are necessary for an effective BSI program. The Basic Skills Instructor will attend:
  • Staff meetings to communicate general information, present assessment results, and conducting training that is pertinent to all grades as needed.
  • Grade-level meetings to provide time to review assessment data, plan collaboratively, revise groupings, receive targeted technical assistance and training, and participate in study groups. These meetings include all teachers providing reading instruction at the specified grade level.
  • Individual teacher meetings with administrators and reading specialists/coaches to review the progress of each student, adjust groupings and intervention intensity, review and modify individual plans for BSI students, ensure pacing and program extension are adequate for all students, share challenges and successes, and arrange for specific technical assistance needs.
  • Scheduled weekly common planning time for classroom teachers and other staff sharing instructional responsibilities for the same students.
  • Monthly meetings with Basic Skills Instructors across the district to discuss best practices, intervention strategies, data analysis and student growth.
