  • Possess a valid New Jersey teaching certificate or valid county substitute's certificate as required by law.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for performing the duties of coach of the sport involved.
  • Experience as a school sports coach preferred.
  • Such additions or alternatives to the above qualifications as the superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Possess certification in CPR, Sport First Aid and Principles of Coaching as required by the NJSIAA.
  • REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Athletics/Principal or designee. JOB GOAL: To assist each participating student in attaining improved skill levels and heightened appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and self-esteem, as well as helping them to realize a degree of individual and team success. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES The Head Coach will:
  • Possess and demonstrate acknowledgement of the particular sport, including all rules promulgated by the NJSIAA, and instruct participants in the knowledge and skills necessary for a high level of achievement in the sport.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of overall program.
  • Foster a positive team attitude build upon good sportsmanship and responsible behavior.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the sport in general and model this enthusiasm for the students involved.
  • Support and enforce all student academic and physical eligibility requirements.
  • Give constant attention to overseeing a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Work with team members to achieve high levels of overall team appearance and performance.
  • Appropriately train and prepare all students for athletic competition/events.
  • Maintain responsibility for the conduct and safety of all involved students under the coaches' supervision before, during and after all practices, games or athletic events/competitions.
  • Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the sport is conducted. Take necessary steps to present and/or minimize student injuries. Attend to student injuries in an appropriate and expeditious manner.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to the athletics office within twenty-four (24) hours.
  • Maintain and apply fair, firm, reasonable, and effective disciplinary procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to district and school philosophy, goals, regulations and policies with regard to student participation in sports.
  • Strive to improve personal knowledge of the sport, including all rule and regulation changes as appropriate.
  • Plan for a regular program of practice and conditioning as prescribed by the NJSIAA.
  • Organize and utilize assistants in an effective and appropriate manner.
  • Model a professional manner during all practices, games and athletic events/competitions.
  • Work cooperatively with the Supervisor of Athletics, all other coaches, and the academic staff.
  • Communicate appropriately with the Supervisor of Athletics, other coaches, other teachers, parents and team members.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing. Distribute, care for and collect all uniforms and equipment. Recommend to the Supervisor of Athletics the purchase of new equipment, the reconditioning of current equipment, and/or the purchase of supplies, as appropriate.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Satisfactorily complete all reports, budget, inventories, and forms as required, in a timely manner.
  • Assist student athletes who are interested in securing college athletic placement.
  • Attend all appropriate in-district meetings and clinics as required.
  • Oversee the operation of in- and out-of-season fitness programs.
  • Perform other tasks and assume additional responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the administration or the Supervisor of Athletics.
  • ?TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Duration of coaching season. Salary as determined by current LEA agreement.
