Review more information at BNL | Benefits ProgramThe National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is an advanced 3 GeV synchrotron light source operating at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. NSLS-II seeks a motivated Beamline Scientist for the In-Situ and Resonant (ISR) Scattering Beamline. The ISR Beamline, currently starting its seventh year of operation, provides state-of-the-art tender and hard x-ray scattering capabilities for studies of novel materials.POSITION DESCRIPTIONThe successful candidate will be part of a diverse scientific program focused on x-ray scattering-based studies of functional surfaces and interfaces. Working closely with the ISR Team and the scientific user community, the selected candidate will assist with operations of the beamline, contribute to development/upgrade projects, establish relevant research projects, and develop opportunities for scientific collaborations that exploit the unique capabilities of the ISR beamline. The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level depending on depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills that she or he brings to the position.Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:•Active contribution to the beamline operations and user support at the ISR beamline •Innovate and upgrade the instrumentation to fulfill scientific demands and maintain beamline performance at the forefront of the field•Develop an independent science program and work as member of a team to conduct experimental studies of functional surfaces and interfaces•Collaborate with NSLS-II and BNL scientists and General Users for effective and innovative use of the ISR beamlineRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:•Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, physics, environmental science or a related field •At least two years of experience post PhD of research related to x-ray scattering, where a strong component of the qualification includes knowledge of surface and interface studies and associated analysis methods•Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills•Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and usersPreferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:•Prior experience of constructing and/or operating beamlines and providing user support in an x-ray user facility •Demonstrated experience in data analysis and data reduction •Significant Python programming experience or similar skills and a willingness to contribute to the development of NSLS-II data analysis tools in an open-source, collaborative environment•Demonstrated capability of working independently•Good organizational, analytical skills and work planning capabilities•Proven abilities for disseminating research by writing papers and giving scientific presentationsEnvironmental, Health & Safety Requirements: Ability to speak, hear alarms, hear and understand speech.Other Information:Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $101200 - $184000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.
