Job SummaryJob duties may include working with small groups, working 1:1 with children, implementing behavior support plans, and providing support for the classroom teacher with prepping materials, etc. Job Description / Essential Elements: Adopted 05/04/11SOQUEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICTJob Description TITLE: Behavioral Intervention AssistantDESCRIPTION: Performs as a member of a transdisciplinary team under the direction of behaviorist, school psychologist and certificated staff by providing specific instructional and behavioral support in all areas of development. Services are provided in the school environment. Assist the certificated teacher in all aspects of classroom processes, including facilitation of student social interaction and small group instruction. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a standard framework of policies and procedures while working in the school environment. REPORTS TO: PrincipalEVALUATED BY: Principal MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY MAY INCLUDE: Provide individualized instructional programs to assigned students across school environments. Carry out and reinforce discrete trial teaching, behavior support plans and behavioral strategies introduced and/or developed by certificated staff. Assist certificated staff with modifying and adapting individual schedules, communication systems, and instructional materials in the school environment. Select, prepare, organize and care for instructional materials, equipment, and arrange classroom environment. Observe children and assist teachers in reviewing students' work, assessing students' needs, and monitoring their progress. Collect rigorous, ongoing data under the direction of certificated staff. Participate in school meetings. Promote opportunities for student independence and social play. Assist teacher with correspondence between home and school as needed. Engage in physical and sometimes strenuous activities with children. Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to families and children. Assist children with toilet training, diapering and hand washing, as needed. Maintain regular attendance. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Perform other related duties as assigned.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would result in the possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent of a high school education; two years of paid or volunteer experience working with children in a special education environment. A year of college with coursework in special education, psychology and child growth and development may be substituted for the two years of experience working with children. Bilingual qualifications desirable but not mandatory. Training Component Behavioral and/or Discrete Trial Teaching For Behavioral Intervention Assistants. This is a description for a comprehensive training program in discrete trial teaching (DTT) for individuals working with students who have intensive behavioral needs. By using a lecture and hands-on approach, individuals will gain an understanding of DTT, and Behavioral Programming techniques for working with children in a one-to-one or small group format. This training will enhance individual teaching skills as well as the ability to manage problem behavior. Criteria for Training 1. Are in the process of becoming a behavior intervention aide. 2. Currently teaching or assisting in the classroom with children who have intensive behavioral needs. Knowledge: Knowledge and/or experience in Autism or other related disabilities. Knowledge of general behavior management techniques appropriate for children. Knowledge of how young children learn concepts. Knowledge of physical and emotional development of children. Knowledge of first aid and CPR.Abilities: Ability to supervise a group of children/students in varying activities. Ability to understand, follow and implement both oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and clearly with children and adults. Ability to support the parent/child relationship by respecting family values, understanding the grieving process, and understanding parent/child interaction. Ability to collaborate with general education professionals.Physical Effort/Work Environment: Strenuous physical effort; Ability to lift, bend, feed and support the toileting of children; may include frequent standing, walking, lifting and occasional climbing, crawling or stooping; use of medium weight tools and materials; indoor/outdoor work environment.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must be willing to attend intensive behavioral trainings. A pre-placement physical examination may be required. Possession of a valid California driver's license and automobile insurance coverage that conforms to California state law. Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate. Evidence of a negative TB test every four years. SALARY RANGE: Range 21 on the Classified Unit Salary ScheduleRequirements / QualificationsA Behavior Intervention Assistant position is available in Soquel Union Elementary School District. Under general direction, perform a variety of instructional and clerical activities for students with emotional, educational, physical or behavioral problems. Receive supervision from the school administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Receive direction from the classroom teacher; tutor under guidelines of classroom teacher; assist in the conduct of intensified learning experiences related to students with special needs served by the special education program; make routine decisions within the established policies and procedures of the classroom and the district.RECRUITMENT PROCESS Applicants must complete a classified Ed-join application.Ed-join application.
