TITLE: BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST

CLASSIFICATION: Certificated

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of site administrator and direction of the Director of Student Services, the Behavior Specialist provides support, training, consultation, and assessment to site administrators and staff in support of special and general education students with behavioral challenges. In the course of his/her duties, the Behavior Specialist will work collaboratively with other service providers, conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA's), develop and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP's) and behavior related goals, assist in the training of teachers and special services assistants, attend IEP meetings as needed and conduct related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General supervision and direction is provided by the Director of Student Services. Responsibilities include technical or functional supervision over certificated and classified staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are typical duties and responsibilities for this position:

? Plan, organize and prioritize own work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks within established timelines; including maintaining accurate records and files

? Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA's) and develop Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP's), following federal and state guidelines as part of Individual Education Plans

? Develop appropriate, data-based IEP goals and monitor progress on goals over time

? Conduct classroom observations to assess program needs and make recommendations for instruction and training

? Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and develop consultation relationships with special and general education service providers; work with a variety of service providers and agencies

? Effectively present complex information on behavior, behavioral assessment, development of BIP's, and implementation of BIP's to staff

? Intervene and model effective behavioral interventions with general and special education students, teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators; provide consultation and training to teachers and paraprofessionals, including the adaptation of curriculum and materials for students with behavioral challenges

? Respond promptly to requests of site principals; provide needed information, assistance, training, materials and resources; plan, organize, and conduct staff development trainings for school staff

? Keep abreast of new developments and research in behavioral intervention and keep current as to these developments

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:

? Techniques for developing comprehensive FBA's and BIP's

? Child development and developmental disabilities including, but not limited to, Trauma, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbance, Developmental Delay, and other conditions with behavioral manifestations

? Principles and practices of instruction, curriculum, professional development and assessment, in General and Special Education settings

? Instructional techniques, materials, and methods for providing information and resources at professional levels

? General and Special Education classroom instructional and management strategies and methodologies

? Educational assessment tools, materials, theories and trends in assessing and identifying student learning and behavioral characteristics

? The IEP process including development of IEP goals in team meetings

Ability to:

? Prepare and analyze comprehensive reports using data and graphs

? Act in a professional and positive manner using tact, patience and courtesy

? Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

? Be flexible and receptive to change

? Maintain strict confidentiality on job-related matters

? Work with children and adolescents that have behavioral, learning and social challenges

? Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and students

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities could be:

Experience Desired:

? At least three (3) years of experience pertaining to duties listed, including experience in staff development and in-service training

? Five (5) years of experience in school settings

Education:

? Master's degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Behavior Analysis, Behavior

Science, Human Development, Social Work, Rehabilitation or related field preferred

Licenses/Certification:

? Valid CA Credential in School Psychology, School Counseling, Education Specialist

? Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
