The Division of Health Psychology at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital is pleased to announce a position opening for a behavioral health clinician (LCSW, PsyD, PhD) in Hartford Healthcare's Surgical and Medical Weight Loss programs. These programs take a patient-centered approach to weight loss, considering the individual physical and emotional well-being of every patient. The programs are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care in order to address not only weight concerns, but also the chronic comorbidities of obesity, including type 2 diabetes, sleep problems, and cardiovascular disease.

Job Summary

The behavioral health clinician's role in Surgical and Medical Weight Loss (SMWL) is a highly collaborative one. The clinician is a member of the core multidisciplinary treatment team and will work closely with psychologists, board-certified surgeons, obesity medicine specialists, advanced practitioners, program coordinators, patient navigators and nutritionists to support the mental health needs of this patient population. The successful candidate should have strong foundational clinical skills in assessment and provision of short-term, focused interventions and an interest in working within a multidisciplinary medical setting, although specific experience in surgical and medical weight loss is not required. Training and supervision in pre-surgical assessments and evidenced-based approaches to support weight loss and other health-promoting behaviors will be provided by senior SMWL psychologists for those clinicians who are interested in the work but may lack specific clinical experience in this area. Opportunities for performing clinical work within the area of Digestive Health may also be available for interested clinicians.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conducting pre-surgical assessments of adult surgical weight loss candidates
  • Providing behavioral health services to adults, including diagnostic assessment and evaluation of treatment needs, collaboration and consultation with medical providers, brief and evidence-based treatments for behavioral and mental health issues
  • Independent maintenance of treatment records and timely documentation
  • Effective utilization of screening measures and assessment tools
  • Data management including tracking symptoms and treatment outcomes
  • Participating in program development and quality improvement research
  • Developing and implementing psychoeducational materials for use in the medical setting
  • Participating in team meetings, case management and coordination, outreach and communication with outside providers
  • Participating in and/or faciliting support groups, community events, and education sessions for surgical weight loss patients
  • Presenting at a variety of training and educational experiences to help educate providers, staff and community members about psychological topics related to weight loss and health.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • LCSW, PhD or PsyD
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Connecticut
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and capable of working independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
