Purpose of Position: Benefits Specialist is responsible for providing supportive services to longtime residents and families throughout underprivileged communities. The Benefits Specialist will educate and enroll low-income, at-risk communities about public benefits programs and foster access to food, all while delivering comprehensive social services. Schedule: Monday - Friday (Day Shift) Salary : $23.92 Roles, Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
- Perform outreach at community organizations within the catchment area
- Conduct educational workshops and presentations at community partner organizations
- Prescreen clients for SNAP eligibility using United Way of New York-approved software and screen clients for all other public benefits through Access NYC
- Educate clients on SNAP eligibility rights and responsibilities
- Educate clients on the appropriate documents and options for submission for interviews, i.e., computer, mobile device, etc.
- Assist eligible clients with the completion of the SNAP application
- Schedule and coordinate client interviews at the appropriate local Human Resources Administration (HRA)
- Submit applications through Paperless Office System (POS) and other documentation through the Easy Access system
- Follow up with client post-interview, to ensure timely receipt of SNAP benefits
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- A minimum of two (2) years of social service or related work experience required
- Demonstrated work experience in social services or related field required
- Knowledge of the NYC public benefits system, ACCESS HRA, HRA, and DHS required
- Bilingual Spanish required
