Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a scientific leader to serve as the point of contact (POC) to the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences (BES), Materials Sciences and Engineering (MSE) Division. The position oversees a broad materials science and engineering portfolio at ORNL, with integrated efforts in growth, characterization, theory, modeling and simulation. The portfolio benefits from interactions with ORNL's user facilities, including the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The MSE POC role provides a unique opportunity for a highly motivated visionary leader to shape the future direction of an exceptional research portfolio that spans multiple R&D divisions at ORNL. The POC's responsibilities include:
* Coordinating and guiding a forefront materials science and engineering research program
* Working across the laboratory to build and implement a strategic vision for the portfolio
* Being responsive to requests from DOE and ORNL management
* Ensuring a culture of inclusion, collaboration, equality, staff engagement, and high ethical standards across the portfolio
* Conducting world-leading materials science research; the POC role is a minimum of 60% effort with the remaining time devoted to research
* Acting as a spokesperson and advocate for the MSE portfolio
* Delivering ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications:
* A Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field
* A minimum of fifteen years of professional research experience beyond the doctorate in academia, industry, or a national laboratory
* A distinguished record of research achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, and funded research programs
* Experience with the DOE Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

* Record of supporting the professional development of research staff
* Demonstrated strength in strategic planning

This position reports to the Division Director for the Materials Sciences and Technology Division and works directly with the Associate Lab Director for the Physical Sciences Directorate.
