Big Sibling Camp Counselor - Camp McCormick Locations: Camp McCormick, Stillman Valley, IL and Camp Dean, Big Rock, IL. This position is required to live on-site. Duration: Summer - May 27 - August 3, 2025 Salary: $800 Weekly Application Deadline: Open until filled Reports to: Camp Director, Camp Assistant Director Summary: Big Sibling Counselors are responsible for one-on-one camper support within assigned unit when unit and camper requests additional assistance and attention. Big Siblings work with campers to identify and plan for their individual objectives for attending camp with the expectation of providing an exciting, fun, and memorable experience for all campers. Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one support within unit for campers who express concerns adapting to camp environments. This can include extreme homesickness, sensory accommodations, overstimulation, or previously expressed accommodation requests from parents and caregivers.
- Work with camp directors and parents for accommodation plans of campers before, during, and after their time at camp.
- Aid in supervision of all assigned aspects of campers' day including morning activities, cabin clean-up, mealtimes, rest hours, evening activities, getting ready for bed and after-hours duties as assigned.
- Teach camping skills in coping, positive self-regulation, and resiliency.
- Work in a team with other counselors, program staff, and assistance staff around camp.
- Guide activities and experiences in the unit through use of girl-leader planning and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
- Support and strengthen courage, confidence, and character in all campers and staff.
- Assist in unit housekeeping, sanitation, care of supplies and equipment.
- Assist with the responsibility for the health and safety of the campers, including providing first aid and ensuring campers maintain good personal hygiene.
- Live in a unit near campers.
- Identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
- Assist in the opening and closing of camp as directed.
- Take precautions to ensure personal health.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings on time and in uniform.
- Be a role model for campers in words, deeds, and actions.
- Provide a thrilling and safe atmosphere for campers to explore, learn, and create while developing personally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience:
- At least 18 years old and have completed high school
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to maneuver through camp without assistance and carry up to 50 pounds
- Integrity, good character, good judgment
- Desire and ability to work with children, peers, and adults in an outdoors setting
- Ability to place needs of campers above own
- Major or focus of study involving social work, youth psychology, or special education preferred
- Experience working with children preferred
- Girl Scout experience preferred
Additional Requirements:
- Be guided in all actions by the Girl Scout Mission, Promise, and Law
- Be a registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and have passed a background check
- Accept the principles and beliefs of Girl Scouting and comply with the most current policies, procedures, and guidelines of GSNI and GSUSA
- Complete required training as assigned and provided by GSNI and GSUSA
Required to attend:
- All check-in and checkout for all sessions
- All camp activities such as games, campfire, and special events
- All meals, including packouts in units
