The Opportunity:

Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) was founded as an activist movement in 1984 in response to United States military backing of the Contra attacks in Nicaragua. BNB began as a grassroots peace activist movement collecting and shipping donated bicycles. The movement grew to have chapters across the United States, Canada, and, at times, Great Britain. BNB's mission integrates interests in the bicycle, the environment, peace, and social justice. BNB promotes bicycle technology as a concrete alternative to war and environmental destruction.

The BNB culture emphasizes a high reliance on trust and peer accountability rather than compliance with policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director will manage the BNB operation, guide and facilitate strategic decision-making and fundraising, oversee financial management, and represent BNB in the community.

  • Lead, collaborate, coach, and support program managers and staff.
  • Oversee budget management and direct financial reporting. Oversee CFO and audits.
  • Collaborate and lead fundraising efforts. Build and strengthen funder and donor relationships.
  • Management and oversight of Programs, Development, and Administration.
  • Support and/or develop staffing structure.
  • Develop and implement policies.
  • Collaborate with the board; attend and support board meetings and development.
  • Guide and direct implementation of the strategic planning process.
  • Oversee HR management functions — staff and volunteer issues and needs.
  • Background and Qualifications:

    The ideal candidate will be a confident leader and experienced manager with vision and purpose able to successfully implement ideas and plans; a natural collaborator, committed to open dialogue and transparency; a dedicated, hardworking self-starter with an entrepreneurial approach and a passion for positive social change worldwide.

    Other Requirements:
  • Minimum of five years' nonprofit operation and staff management experience; minimum bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent directly relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated success as an innovative, facilitative, and collaborative leader; ability to create a vision and inspire others through positive, inclusive engagement.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for creating, leading, implementing, and supporting successful fundraising initiatives.
  • Experience with managing budget of similar size or complexity.
  • Knowledge and proven skills applying best practices for staff, board, and community engagement.
  • Experience working with boards and board development.
  • Experience in grassroots organizations with collective cultures; ability to lead and manage a self-motivated staff of talented, experienced, committed professionals.
  • Demonstrated compatibility with BNB Guiding Principles.
  • Experience or familiarity with youth development, international development, and/or retail bike (or other social venture) operations.
  • Passionate about social justice; experienced and knowledgeable about issues and trends; politically savvy, relationship builder, and collaborator.
  • Proficiency with basic computer and internet technology, office software, and social media tools.
  • Proven ability to effectively lead, manage, and collaborate with all genders, ethnicities, cultures, abilities, ages, and other differences; commitment to inclusion, fair treatment, and creating opportunities for all.
