Job Description:

Bioinformatics Core is looking for Bioinformatics Analyst Intermediate or Senior. The Bioinformatics Analyst will work closely with the Bioinformatics core director ( & and other Bioinformatics core staff will assist in the experimental design and analysis of research projects, provide expert consultation and technical/scientific support to UVA investigators, and participate in outreach and training activities. The analyst will identify opportunities and implement solutions for managing, visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting genomic, proteomic and metabolomic data. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to translate biological questions into technical design, and to identify, prioritize, and execute bioinformatics tasks to meet project goals and deadlines. The analyst will participate in meetings and consultations with clients to discuss design and interpretation and will assist in manuscript and grant preparation. The candidate should be a team player and have a passion for bioinformatics and enjoy collaborating and supporting academic researchers, attending seminars and meetings. We seek a candidate with strong communication skills and a working knowledge of UNIX and scripting. The ideal candidate should be proficient in at least one programming language (C/C++, R, or Python). Knowledge of database development (MySQL/PHP) is a plus and will be considered favorably.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

* Organizing and managing large-scale sequencing data sets

* Manipulating and formatting data using Python, Perl, and UNIX tools

* Using established open-source software and tools to assess quality and analyze data

* Running analyses on a high-performance computing cluster

* Using Unix or a scripting language to extract meaningful results from output

* Using software or genome browsers for visualization

* Using established databases and techniques for annotating genetic variants and results from expression/epigenetics experiments

* Consulting with UVA investigators on experimental design, result interpretation, and grant and manuscript preparation

* In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Education:

* Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Biostatistics, Computer science or a related field

Preferred Experience:

* Experience in bioinformatics or data science, or a Ph.D. with no required experience.

* Strong knowledge of Unix/Linux environments and experience with high-performance computing.

* Advanced proficiency in R/Bioconductor, Python, or C/C++.

* Experience with open-source software, tools, and databases for analyzing next-generation sequencing data-including RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, DNA variation, epigenetics, microbiome, and metagenomics-is a plus and will be considered favorably.

* Experience handling human and mouse next-generation sequencing data, with a strong familiarity with relevant databases and resources for analysis.
