CORE JOB SUMMARY Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center & the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology is actively seeking a full-time Biomedical Data Scientist 2 to work on the UHealth campus. The Biomedical Data Scientist 2 will design, build, and maintain bioinformatic pipelines and tools and integrate them with Sylvester's internal end-user data analytics platform. The candidate will be performing their activities within an interdisciplinary team of research scientists, data engineers and full-stack developers and will be using state-of-the-art software development practices. The ideal candidate should have a passion for data science and be comfortable with building production-ready solutions that will enhance the research activities of the university's members.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS The Data Scientist 2 is a subject matter expert at using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization, using models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action. In addition, the Data Scientist 2 uses a variety of data mining and analysis methods, using a range of data tools, building and implementing models, using and creating algorithms and creating and running simulations. Moreover, the Data Scientist 2 provides recommendations to drive business results with data-based insights and influences a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams.
- Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging company data to drive business solutions.
- Leads the development of a state-of-the-art data portal for the storage, management and analysis of multidimensional and diverse datasets.
- Leads the development of pipelines and workflows for the integration of publicly available datasets with the developed infrastructure
- Performs active project management to develop the Data Portal and other tools, coordinating the timely implementation of user requirements, technical specifications and user feedback
- Leverage state-of-the-art big data and AI approaches and develop computational algorithms and workflows for the identification of novel targets and the prioritization of efficacious drug combinations
- Mines and analyzes data from company databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques and business strategies.
- Leads the assessment of effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
- Develops custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets. Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize customer experiences, operational efficiencies, and other business outcomes.
- Leads different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
- Develops processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions: Responsibilities - Develop and maintain production pipelines for processing and analyzing biomedical research and clinical data: (e.g. bulk/single-cell RNA-seq, WGS/WES, ATAC-seq)
- Develop visualization and computational tools for the exploration and analysis of large scale multi-omic datasets
- Integrate algorithms and pipelines with Sylvester's internal end-user data analytics platform
- Write standard operating procedures and other relevant documentation
Requirements - PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, data science, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Fluency in R or python and Unix (bash)
- Experience with NGS data analysis, using common bioinformatics tools (BWA, STAR, Picard, GATK etc.)
- Experience using bioinformatics workflow management systems (e.g. Cromwell) and pipeline workflow languages (e.g. WDL)
- Familiarity with version control (Git)
- Highly motivated, strong work ethic, and able to work independently and with a team
- Excellent skills in communication, organization, and time management
Preferred Qualifications - 5 years of relevant experience; at least 4years of experience in bioinformatics
- Experience developing and implementing scalable data management and infrastructure
- Experience with Cloud Computing Environments (e.g. Azure)
- Familiarity with relational (e.g. PostgreSQL) and/or NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB)
- Familiarity with container technologies (e.g. Docker)
- Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (e.g. Scikit-learn, Tensorflow), developing and deploying machine learning models
- Familiarity with High Performance Computing
