SUMMARY Increase your chances of reaching the interview stage by reading the complete job description and applying promptly.The Boat Operator is responsible for the work associated with the operation of industrial support vessels that work alongside the dredging operation. The Boat Operator engages in the operating and navigating of the boat to and from the shoreline, the dredge vessel, and dredging areas for survey work. Must be have reliable transportation to and from job sites. Must be able to travel and work a rotating schedule with 8 to 12 hour shifts on all types of dredging and/or marine construction projects. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Additional duties may be assigned. Operates and navigates boat to and from designated areas or vessels Transports crew, equipment and materials Runs hydrographic survey lines Secures mooring lines to the dredge, scows, dredge tender or attending plant Splices and repairs cables and towing ropes Loads and unloads materials from the dredge, deck barges, scows and miscellaneous dredging equipment Operates and provides maintenance and upkeep of boat Checks equipment inventory and supplies, and place orders as needed Performs shifting of the dredge, pipelines, anchors, and support equipment Assists with work on pontoon line, submerged pipeline, attending plant, on anchors and spud systems Perform JSA's prior to work activity and execute the work accordingly Maintains daily logs, ledgers, record books and computer generated reports Ensures compliance with Manson's Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct; Maintains a high standard of ethical behavior, encourages ethical behavior in others, supports ethical decisions and actively seeks appropriate resolution to potential ethical conflicts Responsible for practicing safe work standards and promoting an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) work environment as a condition of employment; Maintains and enforces a safe working environment SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises deckhand assigned to vessel while performing the above mentioned duties; Responsible for assuring those skill sets of personnel under their direction align to the task at hand Ensures adherence to all applicable health, safety and environmental company policies Responsible for writing / participating in work plans and JSA's for the safe execution of all work projects QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. SKILLS and EXPERIENCE Must have 2-3 years of experience operating a boat or vessel. Dredge tending experience preferred. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to work cooperatively with colleagues. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Valid driver's license required. Licensed Boat Operator; USCG Master 100 Gross Ton License required WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to safely execute duties outdoors in all weather conditions, on marine vessels in water, and around heavy equipment/large machinery used in marine dredging and marine construction jobs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The employee must be able to wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) required of various work environments (hard hats, personal floatation devices, safety glasses, respirators, etc.). The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers, to grasp, grip, handle, or feel. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, use stairs, ladders, and step stools and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to navigate stairs, ladders and gangways, board, work on and disembark floating vessels and structures, and be able to transfer from one vessel to another while at sea.
