PURPOSE: The Custodian provides a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. REPORTS TO: Facility Director, Building Principal PAY RATE: Based upon experience TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months. 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Mon-Friday at Fort Scott Middle School, West side of the building. QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: • High school diploma or equivalent required. EXPERIENCE: • Should have basic knowledge for custodial duties • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities GENERAL EXPECTATIONS: • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, and students. • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions. • Ability to perform responsibilities without necessity of close supervision. • Ability to effectively communicate with the school district community. • Ability to meet attendance standards to perform the essential functions of the job. • Ability to maintain a generally positive attitude. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: • Operate all equipment safely and appropriately. • Maintain cleanliness of building and premises (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) at all times. • Ensure that classrooms, student gathering areas, restrooms, corridors and office areas are cleaned daily according to district specifications. • Clean windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, or squeegees. • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming. • Gather and empty trash. • Service, clean, or supply restrooms. • Maintain all floor surfaces according to district specifications. • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors. • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created. • Maintain grounds around the building. • Prepare building and grounds for start of school each day according to building schedule. • Check emergency lights and fire extinguishers and document appropriately. • Ensure that all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off (except as necessary for safety reasons) at the close of each school day according to building schedule. • Report any unauthorized persons in the building to the Principal immediately. • Report damaged school property immediately to the Principal and the Facility Director. • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required. • Maintain mechanical equipment as directed. • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures. • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications. • Perform simple reoccurring maintenance duties • Make minor building repairs, and promptly report major repair needs to the Facility Director. • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems. • Perform other duties as assigned by building Principal or the Facility Director. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: • Level 4 - Heavy Work o Exerting 20 - 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. • Must be able to adapt to a fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment. • Must possess valid driver's license. • Frequent stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, crawling and turning. • Requires climbing and balancing. • Requires lifting, moving and carrying items up to 50 lbs. • Trunk Strength - The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing. • Extent Flexibility - The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs. • Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. • Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. • Static Strength - The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. • Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). • Oral Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round. • Indoors, Environmentally Controlled - Job requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. • Spend Time Using Your Hands to Handle, Control, or Feel Objects, Tools, or Controls - Job requires using your hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls. • Spend Time Bending or Twisting the Body - Job requires bending or twisting your body. • Wear Common Protective or Safety Equipment such as Safety Glasses, Gloves, Hearing Protection, Hard Hats- Job requires wearing common protective or safety equipment such as safety glasses and gloves. • Spend Time Making Repetitive Motions - Job requires making repetitive motions. • Face-to-Face Discussions - Job requires face-to-face discussions with individuals or teams • Must work in noisy and crowded environments. • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors. • Extended period s of time standing/walking - Job requires standing/walking for a full 8-hour shift • Communication after hours may be required to address emergency repair issues.
