Certification incentives up to a total of 20% of base pay will be available as determined in advance by the Building Official and Manager. Position Overview: The Building Inspector for inspecting residential, commercial, andindustrial buildings under construction, renovation, or repair to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, , ordinances, safety standards, and regulations. The inspector will also assist in enforcing county ordinances and the Florida Building Code, issuing permits, and performing related tasks to protect public health and safety. Essential Job Functions Key Responsibilities:Inspections:
  • Conduct routine inspections of construction sites, including new construction, additions, renovations, and demolition activities for compliance with the approved plans and state, local, and federal regulations and codes.
  • Inspect various building systems covered by license(s), including structural components, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy efficiency, and life safety systems.
  • Verify work performed complies with approved plans, applicable codes, and permits.
  • Inspect fences, signs, billboards, canopies, and other accessory structures for compliance with building codes.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings and structures for minor permits such as re-roof, windows, doors, shutters, sheds, etc.
  • Inspect for compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements and other relevant local/state laws.
Enforcement:
  • Enforce Florida Building Code (FBC) regulations and local ordinances related to construction and building safety.
  • Identify violations, document findings, and issue violation notices and/or stop work orders when necessary.
  • Provide guidance to contractors and property owners on code compliance issues.
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Organize daily inspection load, route, and activities.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, violations, permits, and code compliance.
  • Prepare and submit inspection reports, including photographs, diagrams, and descriptions of issues found.
  • Provide documentation and assistance during investigations or hearings related to building code violations.
Customer Service:
  • Serve as a point of contact for contractors, homeowners, and developers, providing guidance on building code requirements.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and assist with understanding building codes, permit processes, and inspection requirements.
  • Address complaints and concerns related to construction or safety issues.
Collaboration & Coordination:
  • Work closely with other local government departments, including zoning, planning, fire, and public works, to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with other inspectors and code enforcement officers to maintain consistency and efficiency in the enforcement of codes.
Continuing Education & Training:
  • Stay updated on changes to building codes, state laws, and local ordinances.
  • Attend training seminars, workshops, and conferences related to building inspections and code enforcement.
Qualifications Qualifications:Candidates should possess a solid foundational background that demonstrates their ability to engage with the responsibilities of the role effectively.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree or higher in construction management, architecture, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in building construction, architecture, engineering, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in building inspection or code enforcement is preferred.
  • Knowledge of South Florida Building Code and local building regulations.
  • Knowledge of building construction methods, materials, and safety practices.
  • Ability to interpret and enforce building codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document findings clearly and accurately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) Building Inspector License in designated trade as required pursuant to F.S. 468.607 - 609 or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Valid Florida Driver License.

As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator. During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently. Constant physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and lifting heavy materials. Requires stamina and the ability to perform inspections in varied environments, including confined spaces, rooftops, or hazardous conditions. May involve working in physically challenging environments or conditions. Requires the ability to use a computer or other equipment while seated. May involve fine motor skills for tasks such as typing or handling small items. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Work is primarily performed in the field in all types of weather conditions and with exposure to natural hazards, such as insect and animal bites and requires operation of a motor vehicle to report to various locations including construction sites and inside and outside of buildings within the jurisdiction. Work is subject to construction industry dangers including falling objects, exposed wiring, uneven surfaces, and hard hat restricted areas. Some office work may be required for documentation, report writing, and permit processing requiring periods of sitting and use of computers and other office equipment, which may lead to eye strain and repetitive motion injuries. Employees engage in customer interactions, meetings and teamwork, requiring effective communication in shared spaces. The role may require occasional evening or weekend work, depending on project schedules or emergency situations.SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Specific requirements include:
  • Mandatory PPE: Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and respiratory masks, depending on the tasks performed.
  • Safety Training: All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement.
