Building Service Technician positions perform a variety of semiskilled building maintenance and repair work that includes carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating and air-conditioning, painting, plastering, and/or concrete work; assist carpenters, plumbers, and/or other skilled trades personnel on major maintenance and repair projects; inspect, adjust, and service building equipment and systems; maintain records; may also drive electric carts, vans, pickup trucks, and operate other equipment; lead the work of subordinate personnel; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    • 2% effective 1/1/25
    • 5% effective 7/1/25
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Building Service Technician employees are required to perform physical tasks including moving and lifting office equipment, building supplies, tools, and other related materials and performing custodial/janitorial functions.
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  • Two years of full-time experience performing semiskilled building maintenance and repair work at a PUBLIC or COMMERCIAL facility. Qualifying experience MUST include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating and air-conditioning, painting, plastering, and/or concrete work.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education, apprenticeship training, or vocational/trade school course work related to woodworking, electrical, HVAC, construction, or plumbing which equals two years.
  • NOTES:
    • Experience gained in a residential setting is NOT qualifying.
    • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
    LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION):
