Must responsibly handle confidentiality, security and safety protocols associated with varying work environments. Position requires demonstrated poise, tact, diplomacy, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working/professional relationships with the public, facility occupants, co-workers and vendors.Position FunctionsESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:* Performs general repair tasks such as replacing worn parts, patching, painting, unplugging P-traps & toilets, etc. When Specialists are not available, may repair or replace plumbing fixtures, and replace electrical switches & outlets.* Performs seasonal grounds duties:* Upkeep maintenance on lawns, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds and other landscape elements.* Responsible for snow removal and ice control in assigned areas.Performs material handling and delivery duties.Coordinates and observes work of contractors to assure county needs are properly addressed.Performs a variety of base level Jail maintenance functions to maintain operations.Operates a variety of hand and power equipment in a safe and effective manner.Maintains tools and maintenance equipment used in completion of duties. Report equipment issues or needs to supervisor.Assembles, installs and moves furniture, fixtures and equipment.Performs assigned routine preventive maintenance tasks.Completes assigned work order requests in a timely and competent manner.Will participate in 24/7 on-call rotation.Responds to emergency maintenance requests as required.Operates equipment such as lawn mower, skid loader, tractor, backhoe, electric power lifts, forklift, pick-up and trailer, dump truck, or similar equipment.May supervise Jail Trustees or Sheriff's Work Program participants.Perform entire work activities as per established safety and secured procedures.May meet with clients to define work requirements.May assist in general construction, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and basic electrical work.Performs other work related duties as assigned.This job specification should not be construed to imply that these requirements are the exclusive duties of the position. Incumbents may be required to follow any other instructions, and to perform any other related duties, as may be required.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:* Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise good judgement when determining if necessary work requires specialty skills.* Minimum six months experience as B&G Technician I or two years experience in basic building (residential) maintenance and repairs. (Basic understanding of building construction; painting; application of sealants; wall repair; replacing door hardware; unplugging P-traps & toilets; replacing & repairing plumbing fixtures; replacing electrical switches, outlets & fixtures)* High School Diploma or GED Certificate.* Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid South Dakota Driver's License. Class B with air brakes a plus.* Qualification in specialty area may be required for additional duty.* Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.* Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.* Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:* Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment; operate assigned equipment and vehicles.* Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 75 lbs. unassisted; lifting/moving anything over 75 lbs. will require a team assist lift.* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.* The ability to talk and hear via radio, telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed.Additional InformationWORKING ENVIRONMENT:* Work under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.* Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure.* Work frequently performed in detention facilities, often within inmate cells or adjacent pipe chases. Work within a secure detention perimeter and around inmates requires strict adherence to security protocols.* Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor field environments; travel from site to site; exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions.* Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines or operational needs.* Some travel may be required for training and meetings.
