Position Description:
- The Bus Attendant is responsible for assisting the bus driver by attending to the needs of special education children and ensuring their safety while in transit.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Cares for passengers' needs while in transit.
- Assists passengers on and off the bus and crossing streets.
- Loads and unloads passengers in wheelchairs using the lift.
- Maneuvers chairs on ramps and curbs.
- Insures that the protective safety devices, car seats, lap belts, and T-straps are in use and properly secured.
- Assists the driver with inspection of the bus after each trip.
- Collaborates with driver on passenger management.
- Manages passengers with ambulatory appliances, restraint systems, and difficult behavior.
- Maintains a professional team relationship with all assigned bus personnel.
- Promptly notifies driver of problems involving passengers.
- Develops knowledge of students' disabilities and needs.
- Maintains confidentiality of student information.
- Accurately prepares and submits all required reports adhering to indicated deadlines.
- Attends and actively participates in all conferences, meetings, and professional development activities.
- Reports emergencies, breakdowns, delays, accidents, and absences to the Executive Director of Transportation or designated office personnel when required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Transportation and school-based administration.

- Successful candidates will also demonstrate and/or possess:
- 3+ years of progressively increasing experience in school transportation services.
- Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture-creator that can inspire and motivate.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
- Successful annual completion of physical examination.
- Successful completion of all bus attendant training courses.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with Special Education Students
- Knowledge of child behavior patterns and ability to maintain student discipline.
- Knowledge of school system policies and procedures.
Physical Involvement:
- Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting up to 40 pounds is sometimes required.
- The attendant is required to climb into and out of the school bus.
- The attendant must be able to operate door opening device and assist passengers from vehicle in emergency situations.
